A somehow underrated artist outside of his native Brazil, Vinicius de Moraes was the ultimate lyricist of the bossa nova movement. Tender and delicate, his philosophical contemplations saw life as a melancholy, fleeting journey brightened by women, nature, and wine. De Moraes needed only a few words to verbalize the meaning of saudade (Brazil's term for nostalgia). Perhaps his powers are most eloquently illustrated in the lyrics he wrote for "The Girl from Ipanema," in which the sight of a pretty girl walking down the beach turns into a meditation on the inherent sadness of human existence. Live in Buenos Aires was actually recorded in the studio in front of a small audience as a re-creation of the shows that de Moraes had presented in Argentina's La Fusa coffeehouse together with guitarist Toquinho and vocalist Maria Creuza. Released in 1970, the original LP was titled Vinicius de Moraes en La Fusa and treasured by record collectors everywhere; the trio's harmonizing on the wistful "Tomara" and the joyful "Que Maravilha" makes it easy to understand why. Luminous versions of bossa staples such as "Ipanema" and "A Felicidade" are also included. Vinicius died in 1980, leaving Brazil in shock at the thought that such a life-affirming artist had actually departed the world. --Ernesto Lechner

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brazilian bossa nova classic!, January 27, 2003
An excellent reissue of the first classic, early '70s collaborations between Vinicius de Moraes, the Brazilian poet/lyricist whose play "Orfeu" helped launch the bossa nova explosion of the early 1960s (and which was adapted into the movie "Black Orpheus") and acoustic guitar genius Toquinho. The two met while working in Argentina, and staged the popular early '70s concert show known as "La Fusa," which is where this material comes from. It's beautiful latter-day bossa nova material, combining the soft, understated beauty of Vinicius' lyrics and Toquinho's driving, but equally restrained accompaniment. There are several limited edition CDs that have recaptured the excitement of these shows, including later versons with Brazilian MPB diva Maria Bethania, who later replaced Creuza as the trio's "girl" singer... This new US reissue has great sound quality, and it definitely worth tracking down!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Vinicus en la Fusa" with Toquinho and Maria Bethania, March 16, 2005
By coffee_fan (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This album was recorded in 1970 in Buenos Aires in a bar named "La Fusa". La fusa was maybe the creator of a bar-style in Buenos Aires called "cafe concert" where musicians would go and perform live; New Orleans style if you like but with latin american music. Vinicius on the other hand a fantastic musician was much appreciated in Argentina and so he went there many times. This record perpetuates a night of bossa in Buenos Aires with Vinicius Toquinho and Maria Bethania.
