Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

St. Lucia may not be the most likely setting for a jazz show, but this 84-minute concert by veteran trumpeter Clark Terry, recorded on that Caribbean island in 2001, is an absolute delight. The Kansas City classic "Moten Swing" and the Duke Ellington standard "Take the 'A' Train" reveal the influence of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, with whom Terry once played; but the trumpeter and his excellent quintet (alto saxophonist Donald Harrison and drummer Victor Lewis are especially good) also navigate more modern waters, including a take on Miles Davis's "All Blues" and Terry's own "Quicksand," a burning, bopping blues. Terry, whose use of a mute on his horn is one of his trademarks, is a swinging, sophisticated player; he's also an amusing raconteur (an 11-minute interview is the principal DVD bonus feature), and his own vocal tune ("My Gal") is downright hilarious. Jazz lovers are in for a treat. --Sam Graham

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't hesitate, June 21, 2008
By rayjazz (las vegas, NV) - See all my reviews
This concert from ST. Lucia, is as good as it gets.
Clark Terry shows off his humor, wit, and oh, looks
so easy playing, that makes him a true master. This
guy is what made, and makes jazz such a beautiful
art form. His accompanment is just as good as he is.
Oh!, if only you could be there, this is very close.
Hats off to the producers of this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love Clark Terry...., March 23, 2007
I've always been a Clark Terry fan. He's a special player, and I wish more of his recording were available on CD, as I wore out most of my Clark Terry albums. I give the DVD 5 stars, as the video and recording qualities are real good. If I was disappointed in one area, that would be that he didn't play enough. Naturally, he does play on every track, and he has a very capable group that he gives way to, but I would have liked to hear him more. There is also a nice interview session with him in the "extras" part of the DVD, which I also enjoyed as much as the concert.
