4.0 out of 5 stars
Had had mine awhile, really love it, March 23, 2005
It gets 5 stars from me for dependability and performance. It is more than enough for the average household or small business. I'm truly mystified by others here who've given it poorer ratings. If you expect it to handle HUGE pieces of paper, 5 inches thick or so, you may run into trouble but if you follow directions and NOT jam THICK pieces of paper in it, you should be fine. Having said that, a visiting 5 year old jammed a huge wad of paper in ours and it handled it anyway. I was impressed.
Other features:
1. It seems to be relatively safe for family use, even in households with children. Since we do have children and others visit regularly, I have looked at it carefully to see if there are any obvious dangers. I don't see any.
It would NOT be safe around toddlers or babies, however (at least, if they weren't watched carefully) if only because they might be able to tip it over or jam their hands in UNDER the protective top.
2. Our trash load is much smaller because the shredded paper is much more compact and takes up less space than unshredded paper. It has a BUILT-IN electric pencil sharpener. Not the greatest pencil sharpener, but it does the job.
3. ONE CAVEAT: There isn't a one-touch button for opening or emptying the bin and the lid is a bit heavy, but perhaps this is normal (this is our first shredder). The bin itself isn't huge but I find I rarely have to change it more than twice a week. If you get LOTS of papework, you may prefer a shredder with a larger bin. I'd say we handle a fair amount of paperwork daily, including contracts that have to be shredded page by page.
BOTTOM LINE: For family or small business use, this should do fine, although it probaby is better as a family or individual shredder. Great quality for the price!

3.0 out of 5 stars
Good, stylish light-duty shredder and basket, February 4, 2005
When the second unit I brought home didn't work either (power light never came on) I figured something was screwy. There's a tiny item buried in the instructions that tells the secret: the top (shredder assembly) has to be firmly and carefully placed on the basket since, as another user said, there's a tiny recessed safety switch--see if you can find it--underneath the assembly that has to contact a thin ridge on the basket--pretty dumb engineering to make these critical parts so thin, hard to see, and unreliable. The Troubleshooting section in the manual amazingly says not a word about this problem! I would guess that 9 out of 10 of the non-functioning units mentioned here are really OK but the safety switch has lost contact. And I would also guess that the 10th unit was used too hard. If you need a fast, serious, heavy-duty office shredder, you'll have to spend more--this one is for occasional personal use. And whoever said the pencil sharpener is not great was right--it works but you have to press the pencil in very hard, and it never feels as if it is sharpening.

For the price, a great value, September 1, 2004
By A Customer
I don't understand why everyone is so hard on their shredders or their reviews. The shredder is under $40 (even less on sale), and works fantastically. It is not a high speed, heavy duty office, multiple hundred (or thousand) dollar shredder. It's designed for the SOHO and home markets, and I think they've nailed it. It's a crosscut shredder (it shreds your papers into confetti), not a strip cut (which shreds your paper into long pieces that could be more easily used to replicate the original document). It is strong enough to shred a credit card (one at a time). It can shred around 5 sheets of thin paper at once, although when I shred thick paper I hear it slow down with only 2 or 3 sheets. But again, this isn't Watergate, it's my house, so it's fine. This shredder comes with a solid plastic wastebasket; most other cheap shredders come with some kind of crummy bag or plastic basket you "assemble" out of strips of plastic that are sure to drip paper crumbs all over your house. The built in pencil sharpener is nifty; I have to admit I started buying wood pencils again after getting the shredder. The unit has a plastic sensor on the bottom; if the sensor does not hang straight down, it assumes an obstruction (lots of paper) is in the way and stops the unit from functioning. If the unit stops and appears frozen, it's often the case that you simply need to lift the shredder from the basket, push the shredded paper down, put the shredder back and turn it on. You should ALWAYS turn the shredder off before pushing paper down in the basket or doing anything with the metal shredders on the bottom of the unit so you don't lose any fingers. Overall, this is a really excellently designed product. I'm very happy with my purchase. I've bought a second for the office, and my bro has one at his house. We're all very happy with this design. I'm sure at this low price, there are bound to be a few lemons in the batch, but don't assume it's a junky product just because you've been unlucky. Don't force too much paper into it at once, and try not to send any metal like staples or paper clips into it.
