Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Michael Hewett is a yoga instructor, but his music draws more on the sound of the American West than on that of the mystical East. Combining electric and acoustic guitars, he creates that wide-open plains feeling you get from Pat Metheny's music; he's joined on several tracks by former Metheny Group bassist Mark Egan. Compositions like "Capricorn" are nicely detailed, electric chamber jazz, while "The Ever Widening Circle" accelerates from plaintive acoustic guitar to a delirious free-fall. But Hewett really sets himself apart on more intimate compositions, such as "Nagual," a haunting adagio on which he plays an acoustic guitar with an e-bow, stringing together a long, mellifluous melody. "Sedona" mixes deft finger-style guitar against a deep mix of cello and electric bass. Hewett loves mixing multiple guitars. On "I Cover the Abyss with a Trance," dual finger-plucked acoustics create a stereo filigree, while e-bowed acoustics snake through the violin and cello refrains. Being in Dreaming signals the appearance of not only a guitar master, but a composer of quietly epic dimensions. --John Diliberto

"This group of compositions is the product of countless musical influences, a deep love for the guitar in all its forms, and a passionate and prolonged relationship with yoga as both teacher and student."

--- Michael Hewett

I heard some of Michael Hewett's music on NPR's Hearts of Space one night. So I did some research and wound up buying the CD. Much of the disc is very pleasant new age type acoustic guitar picking with kind of a southwest flair. "Nagual" is really nice with its accompanying flute sounds, "Sedona" indicative of the southwest flavor, and "I Cover the Abyss with a Trance" is a standout with its violin and cello (the cello works great with just about every song on the album). While there are some rough spots (sometimes there is too much finger squeaking, the last song has long interludes of just a humming tone, and parts of "Transmission" with its electric guitar flourishes make it sound like infomercial music) listening to this album is like drinking a glass of water when you are really thirsty. It just goes down great. Don't be put off by Hewatt's yoga background: though I'm sure it's fine to do yoga to, it's just really nice to listen to. It would be great to play if you own some kind of cool shop, or while you're reading, or just in the car to take some stress out of the daily commute.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic, moving journey., October 27, 2002
This is a true instrumental masterpiece. Listen to it while you are reading or doing yoga or just listen. There is mystery here and deep longing and beauty. This music resonates and expands, is mystical and beautiful. Share it with all your friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars spiritual music for all occasions, August 19, 2002
By Jesse (New York) - See all my reviews
As with only a few others, Michael Hewett's music transcends the limited yoga market for which it is most prominently promoted. This CD has the depth and sophistication that will endure well beyond the daily practices of yoga. He has a range of influences extending form Paul Winter Consort to Pat Metheny, allowing the music to soar at times and to calmly soothe at others. And the musicianship is worth the purchase by itself, as Mr. Hewett employs many techniques to acquire the rich and various sounds. There are few CD's with the variety and cohesiveness that I could think of reccomending. And I advise a good set of headphones to fully appreciate the excellent recording.
