SmartMedia is about 1/3 the size of a credit card, and just as thin. It uses a single NAND flash EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read only memory) chip embedded in the plastic to read and write data. The ultra-small size makes SmartMedia an ideal storage card for digital cameras, cellular phones, pagers, MP3 devices and other electronic devices.SmartMedia has a simple structure in comparison with conventional memory cards. Each SmartMedia card features an embedded NAND-type flash memory chip, and is, therefore, less costly than other types of memory cards. The NAND-type flash memory chip enhances the write and erase capabilities since data is rewritten in small increments. This, in turn, leads to improved performance through continuous data recording. The SmartMedia data format is based on the ATA and DOS file standards. When used with a SmartMedia adapter, the card can be shared between different applications and systems such as a digital camera and a computer.
