Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony uses an ultra-compact flash media memory stick in the ICD-MS515VTP voice recorder. There are many features in this voice recorder which make it a solid choice when you are searching for a high quality recorder. The recorder has two sound quality settings, LP and SP. The LP mode has a sampling rate of 8kHz, while the SP mode has an impressive 16kHz sampling rate. With the included 8MB card, you can store over an hour of voice on the SP setting and over two hours of voice on the LP setting. Don't forget that you can insert other sizes of memory sticks (currently up to 256MB) for even greater recording power.

The recorder has many features which make recording an easy, efficient and smart procedure. The full function LCD display shows the number of messages recorded, recording length, data, time and battery time remaining. To keep track of all your messages and memos, the recorder allows you to personally name 340 files and 965 messages. With the folder organizer system, you can save files into useful folders such as sales letter, customer service replies, memos, action items or personal. The incremental rewind backs up to the beginning of each recording, providing an easy search function. The voice operated recording system stops the recording during quiet moments, saving you memory space, then starts back up at the first hint of resumed noise. With one button play to record, it is a snap to go from recording mode to play mode. The add-recording function allows you to insert and add additional information to a message without affecting the original message. With the hi/lo mic sensitivity button, you can adjust recording level in accordance with the meeting or lecture noise level.

A key feature to this recorder is its ability to take recorded voice and transfer it to written text. Sony has included Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred Voice to Print Software, ver 7.0 in the package. This software converts your recorded messages to text, giving you many editing options. With USB connectivity, it's easy to connect the recorder to your PC via the USB port. This connectivity makes the recorder an extremely useful business tool. Furthermore, with the voice e-mail function, you can easily send audible emails with attached files.

The recorder is compact (only 1/2" thick) and lightweight. With play and recorder buttons positioned on the side, it is extremely easy to operate using only touch, giving you the ability to keep your eyes on the interview subject or guest lecturer. The built-in microphone and speaker allow you to accomplish all your work without extra hardware. When using the required 2 AAA batteries, you can expect 12 hours of playback and up to 12 hours of recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Record Yourself, December 7, 2003
I bought this for my mom (a doctor) last year and she loves it. The point of having a recorder with a translating software is to record yourself and have it turn it to text. My mom uses it for patient charts, and after (much) training it works fine. I think this year I'll get one for my dad (a professor) who can record his OWN voice for lectures, etc. I originally gave this 4 because it was really expensive, but I guess it's meant for people who can afford it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Recorder! Don't buy it!, September 11, 2003
By A Customer
515VTP include voice to print software plus 515 voice recorder. First, voice to print software is a joke! It can only work if you are willing to spend hours in training it. By that, I meant that one has to read/record its supplied articles to your own recorder, upload it, and then you may pray that the software can do voice to print job in the future. It takes at least an hour to teach the software! I bought it for recording lectures notes. I can not go to all speakers and ask them each to spend couple of hours to train my software. It is totally impossible and useless if your are looking for voice to print function. The recorder is also terrible to handle. One key/button can be pushed down in 5 different directions. And, every direction will pop up different window. When it is supposed to be pushed straight down, you have to make sure that you push down straight. If you miss a little bit angle, undesired window/function would pop up, and you have to restart again. It is just totally horrible! The screen's back light only lit when you use power cord. Who bring power cord all the time? Without back light, I can hardly see the words on the screen. It simply hurt my eyes after 10 minutes. The sound is not stereo either! Stay away from this recorder unless you are ready to throw away money. This recorder is expensive too! I am returning mine after on ly couple of hours trying, It is simply a bad recorder! I am going to lose $20 in shipping and returning! I wish that the product specs has warned consumer about its voice to print function. Now, I hope that you won't make the same mistake as i did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good recorder for lectures, January 4, 2005
By K. Jung (CA, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Used this recorder for lectures using an external mic and the quality and ease of use is outstanding. Uploading the recording to a PC and burning a CD is simple and easy. This unit is so compact and can hold all my recordings on a 256mb memory stick (30+hours in the highest quality). One complaint is the play/pause button as I would have preferred a seperate button. The all in one - play, pause, ff, rr - button is a bit of a pain. All in all the best recorder I've used.
