Amazon.com Review

Lexmark's X125 is a compact, self-contained multifunction device for your printing, scanning, and faxing needs, and most of your copying needs as well.

The scanner uses a feed-through device instead of a flat bed, so pages pass through one by one. You can scan them into your PC or make copies in black and white or color without a PC. The X125 looks much like an enlarged fax machine, and indeed provides full fax facilities, including speed dial and up to 70 number memories.

Paper feeds from a near-vertical tray at the rear to a long pullout tray at the front. Above this is a second, clip-on tray which catches pages that have been scanned. The machine uses old-style, high-capacity cartridges which are easy to fit and clip into place.

A two-line LCD display eases setup, by directing you, for example, to align the machine's print heads before installing the driving software. The software includes photo editing and OCR as well as facilities for faxing. It installs easily, but the driver isn't as user-friendly as those supplied with the more consumer-oriented printers, lower in Lexmark's price range.

In our tests, printed output was generally good, with sharp black text and finely detailed color prints. Resolution is high at 2,400 dpi, but we could still see fine dots in areas of variable shading. The print times, particularly for text, were low, with a five-page text document printing in just over a minute. Photo printing, at the best quality, took nearly 3 minutes.

Colour copies weren't that effective, losing definition and bleaching some colours, particularly magenta tones. While they would be OK for quick copies intended for personal use, they would probably not be appropriate for giving to customers.

As a multifunction device, the X125 is functional and well-designed. It has some restrictions, most noticeably an inability to scan from books or magazines, but still provides printing, scanning, copying, and faxing in one compact device at a good price. --Simon Williams

2.0 out of 5 stars Lexmark X125 is a Let Down, April 15, 2003
By A Customer
I bought the X125 All in One after much research. I thought I did a complete job of checking all the facts but I must have let the low price seduced me and I regret that decision.

The X125 is a poor printer, fax and copier. It doesn't do anything well. We experienced problems during our initial set up and we're forced to call the help line. We placed dozens of calls but we couldn't reach anyone. There was no help available and no easily accessible number. This forced us to fill out a help request form at the Lexmark site. It took them five days to get back to us via email and the email that we waited for all week didn't even supply the answer. Basically they made us go through all the troubleshooting steps that were already in the poorly written manual.

After a week we finally got it working. It really wasn't worth the wait. It makes poor copies; printing is below average and don't expect anything from the fax machine. The fax switcher is not reliable and sometimes it won't even pick up the incoming calls. The settings control didn't work properly either. We keep turning down the fax volumn but it keeps going back up. This is part and pacel of what you are going to get with this cheap machine.

But the worse thing about the X125 is the drag is puts on your computer's performance. Since I installed it on my fairly new computer using XP, system performance has degraded. I will end of having to get more memory. I hated this printer so much I ended up giving it to my 12 year old son who is happily using it with his new E machine. Funny thing is, however, after one month, he wants to give it back. His computer has slowed down too. Can you imagine that, he would rather have no printer than that printer.

1.0 out of 5 stars ...Defective, April 9, 2003
By Deborah A. Woehr (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Setting this machine up wasn't too difficult, although I would agree with the other reviewers by saying that the instructions could use some more clarification. I set up the machine, plugged it in, and waited while it "powered up". After several hours, it was still powering up. So, I unplugged it, and tried to enter the date and time. It stalled. I repeated the process and decided to forget about the programming until later.

Instead, I decided to try and copy something. The machine stalled again. What I got was a copy of the first line of the page and a blob of green ink. Not a good sign.

The next day, I had my phoneline installed. Once again, I plugged in the machine. I thought that was the problem, that all the functions had to be on at the same time in order for one to work. That is the case with some all-in-ones. This time, I heard something sizzle inside. Then this horrible smell filled my office. I immediately unplugged it and returned the machine back to the store.

Another thing for prospective buyers: If you use Windows XP, you will need to go to the Lexmark site and download the driver. I didn't get the chance to see if this worked because my machine completely melted down, so I can't tell you whether or not there are any bugs in their software.

I bought this machine because a colleague had one and liked it. For the price, it seemed like the way to go. Once I took the machine out and set it up, I didn't like how far the catch tray stuck out. If you hit it just right, the tray could snap off, or you could knock the machine to the floor very easily. Then there were the other issues I mentioned above.

Lexmark may have better products, but this isn't it. There are other all-in-one machines with comparible prices and better quality. Shop around.

2.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for!, February 10, 2003
By A Customer
I was happy to unwrap this multifunction and set it up with ease. Then I started to have problems figuring out how to only print one page (still haven't). So I now put one piece of paper in the machine so it will only print the first page since there is no setting or button to push to manually stop it. Then I put in my label paper and it ate it! I put in 5 sheets of label paper, selected the "coated paper" function and it pulled all 5 sheets through. I've discarded the box otherwise I would take it back to the store, so I guess I am stuck with it's quirks. A far cry from my old HP multifunction from 1997.
Addendum: I did take it back to the store after the software started to corrupt itself and had to perform "system restore" on my computer to repair function! I do not at all recommend this machine.
