From the Manufacturer
Built on a rugged magnesium metal chassis, the Nikon D1X professional digital camera features ergonomic design, intuitive handling and balance. Controls that are logically positioned for fast and accurate handling and responsiveness will enable you to capture great pictures.
Vibrant Color and High Performance
Vibrant color, exceptional contrast and high definition are the hallmarks of Nikkor optics. The Nikon D1X utilizes Nikkor quality by capturing sharpness, tonal range, color and detail on a high-resolution Charge Coupled Device (CCD). The D1X delivers 3,008 x 1,960-pixel images that easily handle double-page magazine spreads.
High Performance for Superior Photography
The Nikon D1X camera design is intuitive. Controls are logically positioned for fast and accurate handling. Capable of up to 3 fps for up to 9 consecutive shots with JPEG or TIFF formats, the D1X can buffer up to 6 NEF images at the same frame rate. Images will write directly to the installed CompactFlash card, or to a compatible computer via the camera's IEEE-1394 interface.
Quick Response and Shooting Speed
With a quick start-up time and short shutter release lag time of approximately 58ms, using a D1X feels much the same as any other professional Nikon SLR. Combined with very fast image processing, it ensures smooth, worry-free operation. The camera's charge-coupled electronic shutter has a speed range from 30 seconds to an action-freezing 1/16,000 second, with TTL flash sync up to 1/500 and manual FP high-speed flash-sync with a Nikon compatible Speedlights up to 1/8,000 sec. Flash control is available from Manual to Automatic Balanced Fill-Flash.
Fast and Accurate Autofocus Performance
Using a performance-proven Multi-Cam 1300 autofocus sensor, the D1X offers a high-speed, 5-area AF system well suited for fast and creative composition. Photographers can designate any of the five sensors as the primary, allowing faster focusing regardless of where the subject enters the camera's field of view. Choose from Single Servo AF, Continuous Servo and full mechanical focus modes.
The Creative Power of Digital Imaging
The D1X features Auto TTL White Balance, Preset and Manual White Balance and also Fine-Tuning for White Balance. With Tone Compensation, photographers can alter the tonal curve for unusual lighting situations. Additionally, the D1X incorporates two-color modes--sRGB and Adobe RGB--plus user-controlled Hue for up to 14 unique levels of color adjustment.
Exposure Metering and Control Options
The camera features a choice of three exposure metering modes, including 3D Color Matrix, Variable Center-Weighted and 5-Spot Metering, as well as four exposure modes, including Programmed Auto with Flexible Program, Shutter Priority Auto, Aperture Priority Auto and Manual. You can dial in ±5 EV Exposure Compensation in full, 1/2 or 1/3 steps. The D1X provides Auto Exposure Bracketing of two or three frames in 1/3 to 1 EV steps.
Instant Feedback
Nikon's "always ready to shoot" playback system allows you immediate access to seven screens of information about your image to ensure perfect image capture. In playback mode, you can review image information histogram and highlights to assess image quality. Using thumbnail previews, you can quickly evaluate your entire shoot. The LCD's 130,000-pixel construction provides a sharp and colorful image for viewing.
Product Description
It began in the autumn of 1999 with the original Nikon D1, the camera that forever changed the face of photography with its skillful blend of highly advanced digital technology and superb camera design. Nikon calls it "Digital-ness" and "Camera-ness". Digital-ness addresses the practical needs to create an extremely fine image, while Camera-ness speaks to the photographers' needs to handle a camera that responds to their instincts and technical requirements - making great pictures doesn't happen by accident.Nikon's combination of digital and camera handling design reveal an exceptional effort to meet all the needs of picture making professionals while expanding the potential for digital photography. The D1X's 5.33-million effective pixel CCD enables image capture with superior detail and color vibrancy. 3D Color Matrix Metering calculates the optimum exposure value by comparing the brightness and color data, along with subject-to-camera distance, with a reference to a database of real photography. Use of a database distinguishes this meter from typical multi-segment meters. TTL White Balance evaluates color temperature and makes fine adjustments to the predetermined value, automatically achieving proper white balance. TTL White Balance, in conjunction with 3D Color Matrix Metering, adds significantly to the total image quality of the D1X.
