Good affordable unit, but the RM-V301 is better, March 2, 2003
This Sony universal remote is an affordable way to reduce clutter on your coffee table. While not offering some of the snazzy features of much more expensive models (LCD screen, keys that light up, etc), it does offer the basic essentials at an affordable price, and it works well.We have all Sony components (TV, VCR, DVD) and the remote worked almost perfectly without any fiddling. Folks with components made by other manufacturers can still benefit from this unit, but some fiddling may be involved. (You need to program the remote to intract with your equipment, using instructions provided by Sony.) Unfortunately, this universal remote is not programmable for our cable box (made by Motorolla), so we still have to have a second remote at our disposal, but what can you do. The unit is compatible with picture-in-picture, and it has a 20 minute memory to save you from having to reprogram the unit when you change batteries. I found the manufacturer-provided instructions were clear and easy to follow. A similar universal remote model also made by Sony (RM-V301) costs basically the same price but has a very valuable additional feature, allowing you to control a 5th component, a stereo receiver! Through this "5th component" feature, we are able to control both our Sony receiver and our Sony CD player, which is terrific. If you have the option, I recommend getting the RM-V301 over the RM-V201, but both should prove to be helpful to most users.
