Gospel Grammy Well Deserved!, March 16, 2003
I know Eartha shocked the world when she won the Grammy Contemporary Soul Gospel album for Sidebars. It just goes to show that God works in mysterious and mighty ways! I love this album and believe me it'll grow on you just like it must have on those Grammy voters. One thing I can say about this album, I think it reflects Eartha herself, which is a person who truly loves the Lord and praises Him to her best ability through dance and song. This is an uptempo album with good production. Eartha wrote, arranged and performed on all the songs, and I must say she's an excellent song writer. 1. "I'm Still Standing" is about standing strong no matter what comes your way. It was inspired by the events that happened on 9/11. 'I'm still standing hit me with your best shot. I'm not going no where.' This song was also nominated for the Grammy for best female R&B song with all the superstars of the genre. Without doubt, it was the most meaningful song in the category! 2. "Loving You" is a love song unto the Lord, which could easily double as one between a man and a woman. But this is spiritual love and she's express that Jesus is the love of her life. 3. "Engaged" is a song full of faith-filled funk. It's her pledge through prayer to give her all unto the Lord! 4. "Sidebars" is a song about having a conference between a judge and an attorney of a case being tried, held outside of the jury's range of hearing. God is the judge supreme, she's the attorney pleading the case of her life and the jury is the world that cannot hear what goes on between her and God, the one who has the utmost grace and mercy! 5. "What If?" Is a song about the question we tend to ask ourselves. The world would not be the same without the Lord in our lives not matter what the question is, because Jesus is the answer! 6. "Worryin' 'Bout Me" is a song about not worrying about someone when they're gone, because life still goes on. It reads like an epitaph to live a life that will be remembered for the good deeds done. 7. "Next To You" is a slowed down praise song sung unto the Lord with a desire to be closer to God in every way. 8. "Simple Things" is about loving the simple things in life, because we should thank God for the simple things, which many of us take for granted. 9. "Lately" is a song about changing and growing as change comes. 'Lately changing the view of the world as darkness becomes unveiled, and now walking in the light while seeking a deeper love.' 10. "Too Much For Me" expresses the need to feel reclusive because of the problems of the world, but God never allows more of a burden upon us than we can bear because. 11. "Heartbroken" speaks of being heartbroken after realizing she hurt the Lord with the darkness in her life. The first thing we should do is make amends and come back home unto the Lord. 12. "Impressions" is a slow ballad of praise in thanking God for seeing another day each and every day we wake. 13. "Logical Inference" is one of my favorites. It's about looking beyond your own pain which is hidden by smiling for the world while crying inside. All that glitters is not gold. We must look beyond the circumstantial evidence. 14. "Don't Hinder Me" reminds me of Eartha and how she praises the Lord in church. It's a song about being filled with the Holy Ghost, being tongue talking Holly Roller, hand clapping/foot stomping! It's about getting your praise on in church while simply asking your neighbor not to hinder your praise, because it may be because of a circumstance. This song will make you want to stand up and get your praise on, too! 15. "He'll Hold You" is about God holding us in time of need. He is the world's best kept secret! What can I say about this album. It is truly blessed and will make you want to praise God from the first to last track on the album. Eartha showed that God will bless the humble and that God will give His children their heart's desire when we trust Him and strive to live a life worthy of Christ's sacrifice. "Sidebars" will make a worthy addition to any music collection, because it's truly an album of true praise & worship and will make you dance like David danced! God is Love!
