The fifth installment in Stéphane Pompougnac's wildly popular series, Hôtel Costes 5 dishes up more of the impeccably classy, impossibly cool lounge beats that Pompougnac regularly spins for Jean-Louis Costes and his guests at the famous hotel in Paris. As on all the others in this series, Pompougnac's lithe, fun mix features the good taste, smooth textures, and chic musique that his clientele demands. Pompougnac's DJ ears catch perfect segues others might miss, like the little pieces of Vision's dramatic "Ponger Star" that can be found in the preceding track, "Cocaine Is a Sin" from the Strike Boys. The usual clever touches are present as well, like Fantastic Plastic Machine's wonderfully fey cover of Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out." For those of us not fortunate enough to spend our nights soaking up Parisian luxury after a long day of sashaying down the runway, Pompougnac's records allow for a certain vicarious thrill, though more blue-collar ears will yearn for some dirt. After all, dance music at its core is supposed to be dirty, soaked to the bone with sex and sweat. But while Pompougnac's style may lack blood and guts, it's an awfully pretty skeleton just the same. --Matthew Cooke

I've been listening to the Costes collection for a couple of years now! I simply love them all...or almost all!

My first album was "La Suite" (the second in the series). A great album indeed! Immediately after that one I bought "Costes 1", then "Costes quatre" and finally "Costes 5". I had the chance to listen to the "Costes 3" collection, but I really never liked it as much as the rest!

I loved "Costes quatre" and then came "Costes 5", and turned out to be another great collection of music! Cool, relaxing, sensual...just listen to the first few tracks and you'll see what I mean! "Summer in Paris" is my favourite and the cover of Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out" is quite surprising too! Pompougnac really has style when he chooses the music to mix in his Costes albums! "Costes 6" is out already! I can't hardly wait to get it!

If you are looking for a great mix of music with lots of style and variety look no further, the Costes collection has it all!

I am a big fan of chillout and I would often see the Hotel Costes CDs in my favorite section of the record store...deciding to take a dare, I bought number 5 in the series...I always pick up the most recent volume in a series for some reason, don't ask why...Anyway, as anyone who has read my reviews knows I usually buy Water Music records chillout CDs, but due to the lacklusterness of their recent releases, I have been forced to turn to other record labels for my "groove". And boy, did "Hotel Costes 5" do just that! This is a very impressive and eclectic set of songs that had me repeating and re-shuffing[]!! This baby was so tight that I have yet to stop listening to it since its purchase! Played it for my 4th of July barbecue, and guests were asking who was that I was
playing--even my 55 year old uncle who normally doesn't like my musical choices. The mixes from Stephane Pompougnac are remarkable and daring!! The songs are well selected and do wonders for this CD!! I absolutely love the mix of styles from early 1940s "swang" (Gabin's "Doo Uap..." is on point!) to latin funk (Dublex Inc.'s "Tocame" is as raw as it gets!) to Bossa Nova (Physics' "Leaving Monte Carlo" makes you wanna 60's go-go dance all night long) to jazzy-house (just check out every other song I didn't single out) Other so-called mixers should take notes from Pompougnac. He is truly the best at what he does. Now, I'll have to go and purchase the other volumes of "Hotel Costes." LAWD!!! Just when I thought my CD addiction was cured!

I started out with Hotel Costes 4 which I had not stop playing over and over and over again. Recently I went to my local CD store with the thought of checking out No 3 which has Shirley Bassey on the disc and left with No 3 and No 5. Now I am at a loss as to which one I should listen to over and over and over again.

This is a CD that won't disappoint just as No 4 and No 3 did not. It is consistently good and highly recommended for those wishing to listen to variety on a single CD. Not sure if it can be labelled ambient or house, it is just different and stands up to repeated listening. Each track comes back to you differently each time you replay it, very interesting.
