Rollin' Stoned, October 10, 2002
Aahh. Finally the Kings return with the 4th full length album. 6 years later, less one orignal member, and they still know how to get down. At first listen, several tracks off Rollin' Stoned share very few characteristics of previous works. Although the Kings keep their tag-teaming rhyme style throughout, several songs display a strong punk rock influence (Full Throttle, Zero Tolerance, Sub-Noize Rats just to name a few) which was almost non-existant on previous albums. The content of the Kings work has not changed, nor will it, hence the name, Kottonmouth Kings. The theme has stayed the same from day one, "live while you live," and smoke a lot of weed. Personally, I feel as if this album shows how the group has matured musically over the past few years. Not only to the beats seem to be more technical thanks to Bobby B, but each member actually sings! Also, this is the first Kottonmouth Kings album to use the 'interlude' feature the Kings very own old basketball coach. To sum: The new album is great, although the style has seemed to change from hip-hop to more rock. For you devoted fans, give it time. Kick back and LISTEN to what these guys say. Don't let the new sound change your ideas about the group.
