Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Eliza Thornberry and her simian pal Darwin take on an African safari, evil poachers, and a London boarding school in Eliza's big-screen debut. That's quite a tall order for a 12-year-old--and a movie soundtrack--to handle, but like the dynamic tween, The Wild Thornberrys Movie delivers. Youssou N' Dour and Sting, Angelique Kidjo with Dave Matthews and Las Hijas del Sol contribute world music celebrations flavored with exotic percussion and soulful vocals, while Baha Men skid around on the manic pace of reggae-pop with "Accident." Paul Simon's jungle-folk-tinged "Father and Daughter" is more traditional rock, as is the Pretenders' cheerfully uptempo cover of Intaferon's 1980s obscurity "Get Out of London," and Peter Gabriel's "Animal Nation," which harkens to the throbbing guitar electronics found on his 1992 album Us. Even the teen pop-centric tracks are high quality--Nick Carter's sunny keyboard nugget and Sita's irresistible "Happy." Appealing to kids and adults both, without pandering to either crowd, The Wild Thornberrys Movie is an enjoyable delight through and through. --Annie Zaleski

5.0 out of 5 stars Shake this tree!, December 7, 2002
By A Customer
I had previously heard very little about the Wild Thornberrys, but when I saw the tracklisting for this particular soundtrack, I knew it was a must-have. Unlike far too many soundtracks which often have one or two memorable songs, this one has at least a good handful. Paul Simon starts it off with "Father and Daughter", his first soundtrack contribution in almost a decade. The remix of Peter Gabriel's "Shaking the Tree" is decent, though not as good as the original or even the 1997 remix from the film Jungle 2 Jungle. Wes' "Awa Awa" is a touching African tune which would fit right in The Lion King. Also appearing on this diverse soundtrack are new songs featuring artists such as P. Diddy, Sting, and the Baha Men. My favorite track by far is Peter Gabriel's "Animal Nation", a fascinating, atmospheric song inspired by Gabriel's studies of bonobo apes and their intelligence. Though I have yet to see the film, I highly recommend this soundtrack, as it is easily one of 2002's best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Put These on the Radio Please?, January 26, 2003
By A Customer
I listen to this sequence 1,2,7,8,9,12 and 14; and repeat it because this is by far some of the best music from 2002 we can listen to forever.2003 Still kickin it up! Buy this disc and have a happy day. It's sort of a King Sunny Ade' feel with cool vocals and rhythms and bass. Oh, by-the-way, the rest of the cd is hip too. And Sting is un-mistakable, Paul Simon is Me and Hulio meets Graceland. Dave Mathews' acoutic style will have you wanting more; and by-far the best Reel Big Fish, ska tune and the Baja Men are killer on Accident. Awa Awa by Wes is true to heart and the Pretenders tune is a surprise and more! Buy this soundtrack and call your local dj to play this on the radio.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the whole family!, September 12, 2003
I have a 4-year old son who fell in love with the Thornberry's when this film came out. One of the problems that I have with most kid films is that the music is less than desireable. I went to see this film, ready to be just as annoyed as with the others.

Nice to hear how wrong I was.

I loved the film and I loved the soundtrack just as much, if not more. The list of artists for this project is amazing: Peter Gabriel, Sting, Dave Matthews, Paul Simon, and Rusted Root just to name a few. the whole album is well produced, not one of those typical crappy "look we have kids singing kids songs and they're sooooo cute!"

ugh.

My son and I have spent hours listening to this cd in the car, wherever we go. The Peter Gabriel tune, "Animal Nation" is one of the best songs he's put together in over 10 years. A real treat for sure.

The music producers put together a smart list of artists who put out some smart, original pieces for this film. I love this compilation and I heartily recommend it to all.

Pick it up, you won't be disappointed.
