Biography

Rather than taking the underground route like most Southern rappers, Petey Pablo took the direct route into the rap game: he went straight to the top. Though few knew much about him, Pablo suddenly broke in late 2001, and not just in the South but from coast to coast -- MTV rotated his video and urban radio championed his debut single. That single, "Raise Up," took the U.S. by storm, breaking into… Read more in Amazon's Petey Pablo Store

3.0 out of 5 stars I never thought I'd like Petey Pablo, but..., September 21, 2004
When Petey Pablo first arrived on the scene with "Raise Up", I thought he was really nothing special (despite the song having an incredible beat from Timbaland). To me, it sounded like Petey was another one of those rappers full of talkin'-loud-but-ain't-saying-nuttin'; a notion that was further confirmed after hearing the follow-up song "I". And, as many people already know, this album was supposed to have come out in 2002 with the lead single "Blow Your Whistle". That song didn't catch fire (I don't even remember how it went), so the album got pushed WAY back. But it finally came out this year.

I personally think "Freek-A-Leek" is a pretty good song. Sure, it doesn't have the most creative subject matter, but the lyrics and music are dope enough. "Vibrate" is pretty good too, but some other good tracks are innovative in that Petey is actually SINGING at times. Now, most rappers shouldn't do that, but he actually doesn't sound that bad. "I Swear", "Roll Off" and especially "He Spoke to Me" are songs that I think are very good. That may not be what some fans want to hear, though, so those tracks may not be your cup of tea.

Despite the good songs on this album, I still have to give it three stars. This is because the album has 17 tracks, and for only five of them to stand out is a cause for concern. Like, when I heard the second track, "Did You Miss Me", I said, "No, if you keep making songs like THIS." And some of these other songs don't make any sense, like "Boy's Bathroom"; and I'm not sure if "Be Country" is a rap or an interlude. There are also some very short songs that go nowhere, like "What You Know About It" and "Stick `Em Up." And "Jam Y'all" suffers from a ridiculous chorus.

Regardless of this album's shortcomings, Petey Pablo did improve his style. But maybe he shouldn't have tried to stick so much filler material on this album and instead just worked more to make a FEW of the songs better. Let's hope he works on his diary some more for his next album.

Anthony Rupert

P.S. In response to another reviewer, if you don't like rap, don't review the album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Have an issue, here's a tissue..., May 31, 2004
By ruserious (Anytown, USA) - See all my reviews
Here's why I like Petey Pablo: he tries to be creative, and he is himself. That is lot more then you can say for a lot of rappers. With the exception of O' its On (which is still a hot song), Petey doesn't try to act like he is the hardest thing since Ron Jeremy discovered [adult relations] (I came up with that one). When you listen to a Petey Pablo album, you know he's having fun and he's putting his all into the album and doesn't care if people like it or not. Petey's second solo act has hot beats by lil' Jon (whose beats all sound the same but some come out hot), Timbaland, Kanye West, Mannie Fresh, and T&J productions who produced Boy's Bathroom which I'm definately feelin'. I also like how he split the cd up with the faster paced tracks in the begining and the slower, but still relatively upbeat, songs at the end. The clowns who gave the cd one star probably bearly listened to it. Actually, I guarentee the one kid never even listened to the cd but still reviewed it. If your going to say something sucks, try it to see if it actually sucks. Until then, your opinion is worthless and we all wasted our time having heard it. But, if you don't even like rap music, here is quick tip for you: don't listen to rap music, and don't waste your time writing reviews for rap cd's. It may seem difficult at first to pull yourself away from rap music if you don't like it, because then you will have nothing to whine about. But, I guarentee that if you follow my two step program, and stop listening to rap and stop crying about it in your reviews, we will all be better off. (...)

4.0 out of 5 stars Petey Puts Out a Great Sophomore Effort, May 13, 2004
By Bryan A. Mabe "B.A.M. Man" (Portland, Oregon, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Petey Pablo is a rapper who does his own thing. His songs are his own and he brings an individuality that is almost gone from hip-hop these days. These days everyone wants to be Fifty Cent, 2Pac, Biggie. They are all three legends, but to really make a mark in this game you have to be original. Petey delivers. As far as the album goes:

1. Part 2 - 4/5
2. Did You Miss Me - 3/5
3. Jam Y'all - 5/5
4. Freek A Leek - 5/5
5. O It's On - 5/5
6. Let's Roc - 4/5
7. Stick 'Em Up - 3/5
8. Get On Dis Motorcycle - 5/5
9. Break Me Off - 3/5
10. Boy's Bathroom - 3/5
11. U Don't Want Dis - 4/5
12. What You Know About It - 3/5
13. I Swear - 4/5
14. Roll Off - 4/5
15. Be Country - 4/5
16. He Spoke to Me - 5/5
17. Vibrate - 4/5
