Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Tribunal expands the scope of Morrowind and includes more of what made Morrowind such a great game. It offers a large and detailed world, alien landscapes, and a great deal of intrigue, as well as the freedom of exploration unique to Morrowind. The basic plot embroils your character with two members of the Tribunal, a cadre of god-like people who watch over all the land. There’s something afoot in the isle of Mournhold, and it’s up to you to get to the bottom of it.

Tribunal’s biggest addition is more real estate. An entire new island can be reached as soon as you install the game; you need not complete Morrowind first, but it helps because the story picks up from where the main game left off. Mournhold was designed as a response to players who felt Morrowind was too easy for high-level characters--it’s a dangerous place to be. Thankfully, you can hire mercenaries or pack animals to help you out, and a new journal helps keep track of quests.

Some Morrowind fans might be disappointed that the new landscape isn’t as big as Morrowind. Part of the problem is that travel is a breeze: an in-game mechanic makes it quick and easy to get from point A to point B, but you lose the fun of hitting all points in between. Still, if fast transit isn’t your thing you can hit the mainland for some hiking.

The graphics remain state-of-the-art and the new monsters and content are beautiful and well crafted--this is what happens when a talented team can spend all their time creating adventures, rather than worrying about creating the tools and game engine. Tribunal is well worth the time and money for fans wanting a bit more Morrowind to explore. --Andrew S. Bub

Pros:

  • More Morrowind to explore
  • Tighter focus, better quests
  • Better high level content
Cons:
  • More linear than Morrowind
  • No guild quests

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it, March 12, 2003

When I first went to Mournhold, site of the Tribunal expansion, I was a bit disappointed. After all, it appears to just be a single city, roughly the size of Balmora and arguably less interesting! Suffice to say that this is NOT all there is to it. A bit of patience and a few quests will go a long way to fulfilling your every desire in regards to exploration, enemies, and rewards.

The expansion largely takes place in the city of Mournhold, but if you are journeying in normal Morrowind you will also see Dark Brotherhood assassins that will trigger the expansion plot. A bit of a warning- they do come quite early and can get pretty tough, so be careful where you rest. The expansion is definitely geared for higher level characters. There is a mercenary you can hire to tag along and help, but you'll need to be upwards of level 30 if you expect to play straight through the new areas. Of course, you don't have to do it all at once, and you can return to Morrowind at any time.

The lack of new items in the early part of the expansion can be disappointing. All I can say is to be patient, because there's certainly some VERY nice ones to be had. Mournhold also has some useful things for sale, such as adamantium weapons, glass armor, and a smith that will make glass, adamantium, or ebony armor if you bring him raw materials. There is also a museum where you can sell artifacts for up to 30k gold (if you aren't patient enough to use Creeper or Drunken Mudcrab) and a mage that sells unlimited quantities of grand, greater, and common soul gems.

The expansion includes at least 7 completely new creatures, as well as some very tough unique opponents. There are a lot of extremely cool new areas and puzzles, and dungeons that make the biggest ones in Morrowind look drab and puny. If you've liked the main game, then this expansion is a sure-fire buy. It adds a great deal of extra play, and is definitely worth your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars a nice surprise, November 17, 2002

I wasn't terribly impressed with Morrowind when it first came out. I think I was a victim of all the hype and expected the world from the game. Months have passed and on a whim I bought this expansion pack. Going back to Morrowind has been a gas. They've fixed the issues with the journal and I find myself really enjoying the game.

The expansion pack fixes issues and adds enough content to make this a really compelling game. I'm back in Morrowind and recommend this to anyone.

If you bought the game when it came out but found it under whelming, it's time to go back and give it a second try.

4.0 out of 5 stars Niceley designed add-on without a doubt, April 13, 2003
I am going to make this review short. Tribunal is an excellent addition to morrowind. And better yet, even like Unreal Gold, it's built into morrowind. Which is just plain awesome. New locations, items, allies, enemies, and just plain ordinary characters interestingly and beatifully designed and fun to interact with have been deisgned in tribunal. Although the expansion pack is a bit small, (which why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars), it is a great addition to morrowind, and I cannot wait till the bloodmoon expansion pack comes out.(I also got decent frame rates in areas of tribunal), I reocmmend it!
