Biography

British DJ, musician and producer Fatboy Slim was born Quentin Leo Cook in 1963; he went by the name Norman at school. He has had success under a number of different names and with several musical styles, but is best known for taking the big beat sound and popularising it worldwide.

His first big success came in the band The Housemartins who found success in the UK with the 'poppy' "Happy Hour" and… Read more in Amazon's Fatboy Slim Store

Editorial Reviews

Featuring one new track and five remixes, Illuminati is one of three late 2002 EPs from Fatboy Slim (along with Camber Sands and The Pimp) that are based on material from his 2000 record, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars. After a flood of imports, bootlegs, and singles that have already been released in Halfway's wake, Illuminati distinguishes itself on the strength of its single original track, "Illuminati." Featuring Bootsy Collins on vocals, the song peels paint off walls as efficiently as Slim's "Because We Can" from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack did last year. Filling out the record are some of the more innovative remix tracks that have been done from Halfway's material, including Timo Maas's take on "Star 69" and a nocturnal, trance-based mix of "Sunset" from Darren Emerson. If you're a Fatboy completist (and God help you if you are), or if you've been unable to track down these remixes, Illuminati offers an interesting extension of Halfway's vaguely mystical themes and playfully adventurous house music. --Matthew Cooke

5.0 out of 5 stars Demons makes this a must buy, February 8, 2004
By James McGill (Phoenix, AZ, United States) - See all my reviews
It's a shame that you can only preview the first five tracks here at Amazon.com, because for me track 6, Demons (Stanton Warrior's Mix) is my favourite track on this album. The baseline is strong and the track is a good six minutes of joy. If you can enjoy Macy Gray's voice then this mix is wonderful. There is a similar mix of this remixed by the same person on the Chamber Sands EP, but this version is more thumping. I also enjoyed the Star 69 and Sunset remixes on this EP. Illuminati is also good. The other two tracks can be skipped.

4.0 out of 5 stars The first part in a neat little EP trilogy!, March 20, 2003
...this is disc one in a three-EP set released by that wonderful American techno label Astralwerks. It contains one b-side plus a slew of remixes from Slim's excellent third album "Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars".

The b-side, "Illuminati", is a track Fatboy Slim has been tweaking for years now. It first surfaced as the song "Michael Jackson", a b-side to his debut album, "Better Living Through Chemistry" before appearing as a bonus track on the US version of the album. It popped up again mixed into Slim's mix CD "On the Floor at the Boutique". It made its latest appearance in the film "Tomb Raider" and onto its soundtrack. This latest incarnation is probably the best. It's still catchy as ever and Bootsy Collins' vocals replace the Michael Jackson samples (i.e. "Micheal Jackson...look what you've done!")

As for the other remixes, I just really haven't got the hang of them. Timo Maas' mix of "Star 69" is pretty good and I just love the Darren Emerson mix of "Sunset (Bird of Prey)" which throws Jim Morrison's vocals through a vocoder, but the other remixes sound kinda bland.

Still, out of the three EPs, "Illuminati" is probably the best due to its stellar b-side and two excellent remixes.

5.0 out of 5 stars fatboy slim...minus the fatboy, uh, slim...weird, February 2, 2003
By Null (Where I Am) - See all my reviews
all right...i'm gonna start out by saying that i'm a fatboy slim enthusiast, and won't stop until i have all his CDs pre-ordered, burned, or the like. even though it isn't fatboy, the new ideas that the remixers have taken to these songs is incredible. in fact, i'm listening to Illuminati right now! (it's a remix of Michael Jackson from his CD Better Living Through Chemistry.) and then came Timo Maas' mix of Star 69, (originally off of Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, but also used in Live on Brighton Beach.) all I could say was "wow" when i first heard this song. this will be the more complete review...just because i want it to be. i guess this is as complete as it'll be. i've just lost all interest...sorry. the CD IS good, get it. You'll agree!
