I am not a musicologist of Tango which is very wide in range, but I give this compilation, 5 stars. It seeks to trace the history of Tango, when at first it may have been in smokey bars and other such places, in the early part of the 20th century, to climbing to Haute Societe; ball rooms, of gentlemen in tuxedos, and ladies in fine regalia, dresses designed to accompany the dance, and it seeks to trace it's development, from the Port to Paris; 17 instrumentals. The liner notes say, Tango started to fade (but some time later made a comeback) during the mid '50s, yet, about half of the instrumentals, are from the late '50s. I have listened to many Tango recordings, from the todotango website and other places; I consider the Tangos on this CD, to be among the best I have listened too. Opening up with "Inspiracion" indeed, this sort of sets the Tempo for the entire disc, until the closing with the most reknown Tango of all, in fact, a trademark , I would venture to say, "La Cumparsita" and a very smashing version at that recorded live in the year 2000. In between many more fine instrumental Tangos to listen too.
