Product Description

From the Manufacturer

SmartDisk PCI and CardBus Cards offer instant expansibility for computers that don't have FireWire (IEEE 1394) or USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connectivity as standard. As more and more peripherals use these high performance standards you need SmartDisk's easy-to-install cards to get your computer connected at maximum speed. Both the USB 2.0/FireWire and FireWire-only cards feature a direct power connector that allows safe FireWire "bus" powering of multiple devices. Cards without this feature draw all their power from the PCI bus, which can lead to instability problems. All of SmartDisk's PCI and CardBus cards come complete with an easy-to-follow printed user guide and all necessary software drivers.

Product Description

The VST FireWire CardBus Card allows users to add FireWire technology to non-FireWire enabled laptop computers. By inserting the VST IEEE 1394 compliant FireWire CardBus Card into the "type II" CardBus slot, laptops are able to connect to FireWire video and storage products including VST's IEEE 1394 FireWire Hard Drives and Zip Drives. Users can even assemble a functional and low cost portable video editing workstation by utilizing this CardBus Card with compatible digital video editing software packages and FireWire enabled digital cameras. This product is compatible with the 1998 and 1999 Version G3 PowerBook Series and PC laptops running the Windows 98SE operating systems.

2.0 out of 5 stars Easy installation, but performance is weak, January 29, 2003
By A Customer
This card is an off-branded "SmartDisk" card, with no mention of the VST brand anywhere on it. Although installation under Windows 2000 was a snap (plug it in), my iPod has yet to work correctly with it on any of my laptops. Instead of recognizing the iPod as a drive, it recognizes it and then dumps it over and over after 3 or 4 seconds. In addition, the power provided by the card requires plugging in a clunky AC wall adapter to a port on the Firewire card -- not as elegant as I had expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars works great with your ipod, October 26, 2002
By Erica Ford (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
if your laptop does not have a firewire port, you need a pcmcia firewire card. this one is inexpensive and it gets the job done. i would not use this to charge your ipod though because it sucks up laptop battery power. as we all know, laptops are notorious for not lasting that long on battery!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Firewire Card, February 3, 2003
By A Customer
Bought this card based on the other reviews. Just got it last week. WinXP found and installed it without any problems. Connected my Mini DV camcorder, and was doing movie captures within 10 minutes. Great card for the price, and no annoying dongle.
