Two of the BEST Games EVER made, February 11, 2003
there comes a time in the life of a gamer when he grows tired of playing the same old boring FPS (First Person Shooter) games he or she have come to love (don't get me wrong, they still rock!) this is where thief and thief 2 come in. when i first got these two games, my heart pounded in suspense, my mind was going haywire, and the drool slowly formed in pools on the table. no game to this date has captured my ultimate interest, passion, excitement, and overall fun than these two games. these are the BEST games i have EVER played. not even Deus Ex matched up to all of the amazement and wonder i went through as i played these games. this game is a "first person sneaker" where stealth is more crucial than braun (and i mean it, this isn't your metal gear solid 2, i could just cap him easily sort of thing!) guards react to your sounds and the sight of you, shadows are used to hide, items such as water arrows, mines, scouter eyes, etc, are your allies, and the gold and wealth is yours for the taking (literally, you can steal valuables for money!) graphically, the dark engine is outdated, but who cares, it still looks decent in my book, adds a rich and creepy atmosphere, and can handle even low end machines. not only do you go up against guards, but machines, beasts, and the ever-so-popular undead as well (which totally will scare the living ... out of you). overall, if you want two incredible games with great stories, gameplay, atmosphere, and strategy, GET THESE GAMES IMMEDIATELY! also, be on the lookout for Thief 3, by Ion Storm. Gaming Guru Creator Warren Spector (Deus Ex, System Shock 2) is helping in the design and the graphics will be using the Unreal Havoc engine. Thank you, Looking Glass, for a tremendous experience!

as good as they get, August 1, 2003

normally, i use a mac, but when i bought my windows game box, i had to buy some food for it. i ordered, with low expectations, a whole bunch of [cheap games] including these old thief games. what i got absolutely astounded me. let me start by saying i dont play internet games, and the military games so much in vogue dont interest me (the real history is so much more fascinating). with thief, here are two games that are "shooters" where you dont have to kill anyone. as a matter of fact, the higher levels of expertise require that you dont. in this way, this game reminds me of two of the best ever, deus ex and nolf.it is often easier to kill the people who are obstructing you in your larcenous quests, but that makes the games easier . when i am stealing, all these characters attempt to interfere. killing them allows the player to steal in a stress free environment, but a good thief shouldnt kill. the difficulty level depends not on the strength of opponents, but on the number of tasks and objectives you have to accomplish. on expert difficulty, you must find many hidden relics, gather more loot, kill fewer people, all while getting less available health. health is very uncommon, so you have to go through this whole game taking almost no hits (no convenient medikits) which adds considerably to the difficulty. many reloads are required. thief 1 is an old game, with rather crude graphics. dont let this fool you. it is dark, creepy, and very difficult. for outright fear, it is better than Undying, and there are several levels that are as hard as any video game (bonehoard, haunted cathedral, and return to the cathedral). you have to contend with haunts, zombies, burricks (overgrown frogs with bad breath), bugmen, and scissorhands. this is video gaming at its best. thief 2 is more refined. the bad guys are more plausible, though not as scary, and the combination of middle ages setting with modern technology (electricity) can be quite amusing. the police station which you must infiltrate has all the modern accoutrements despite its medieval location. the shooting range has the electric target track runners, but with archery targets. the levels are HUGE, particularly citibank, party, and soulforge. two complaints only: the two game set does not contain the "gold" version, typical of windows reissues, and its not available for mac. games of this quality should be. so, if youre looking for games which are exciting, challenging, and give a sense of accomplishment, and at the same time have a cheap price, forget the fact that these are old and look at the gameplay and the level design. they have not been surpassed.

"When I Find You...", October 13, 2005

What more can be said about the geniuses that were Looking Glass Studios? First the brilliant sci-fi, 1st person, cyberpunk, action, horror games "System Shock" and its better "System Shock 2" (greatest PC game ever made) and the two Thief games here. After the 2nd game, LG folded and much sadness filled the land...
Well Thief 1 & 2 are amazing examples of intelligent game design and story.
You'd think that sneaking around the corners and shadows would be boring but playing Garrett's role as master thief is a unique adventure.
The array of weapons and tools are impressive. Lock-picking and keys give the game an edge I've never seen before except maybe the "hacking" in the System Shock games.
The characters and story lines are very intricate and engrossing. The dialogue jumps from modern-ish (Garrett's monologues) to Medeival (all else). Stephen Russell does a terrific job for the voice of Garrett (he also did voice overs in SS2) as well as the rest of the actors giving the characters life. Some of the dialogue is funny (Here chicky, chicky...) but not silly (except for the drunkards). The passages, letters and signs are well written giving the "religions" in the games depth.
You're hard-pressed to find more engrossing games than what Looking Glass created. Deus Ex comes close because it takes aspects from all 4 games (sneaking,cyber-punk, hacking, weapons, shadows, great voice-over actors) and makes a terrific game as well.
Find any of these and I'm quite sure you'll never stop playing these games till your eyes bleed or butt falls asleep.
"Brilliant! What else yah got?"
