Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Pioneer resumes its release of complete episodes of The Judy Garland Show with Volume 7 (due to a change in numbering, there was no Volume 6). The combination of episodes not only provides an overview of the show's brand of variety entertainment, but demonstrates why it was such a good showcase for Garland in her post-Hollywood career. Episode 14 (aired 12/29/63) features Bobby Darin's singing, some comedy by Bob Newhart (including a self-deprecating sketch with him and Garland), and a dance number, but also a number of songs by Garland. Episode 23 (3/8/64) is all Garland, as she performs a solid hour of songs from the movies, and yes, that includes "The Boy Next Door," "The Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe," and "The Man That Got Away" (but not "Over the Rainbow"). Making the DVD even better are outtakes (not just funny bloopers, but a story and a three-song sequence), extensive liner notes, and a very interesting commentary track by series producer Gary Smith (he describes the joys and frustrations of working with Garland and explains that the show tried a lot of different ideas at the network's urging in hopes of improving the ratings). A lovingly produced package all the way around. --David Horiuchi

From the back cover

40 years ago, Judy Garland began work on her most important project: A weekly musical-variety TV series, which today serves as the finest video record of her as the world's greatest entertainer. Now, two of the best episodes from the series' 1963-64 television series are appearing for the first time on DVD.

In a special one-hour solo JUDY GARLAND IN CONCERT program, Judy sings MUSIC FROM THE MOVIES, including such beloved classics as "Stepping Out with My Baby," "Alexander's Ragtime Band," and "You're Nearer." Most importantly, she sings some of her biggest film hits, including the Oscar-winning best song "On the Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe" (from The Harvey Girls), "The Boy Next Door" (from Meet Me in St. Louis), "Be a Clown" and "Love of My Life" (both from The Pirate), "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" (from Ziegfield Girl), and one her most requested signature songs, "The Man That Got Away" (from A Star Is Born).

Singer Bobby Darin and comedian Bob Newhart share the other hour on this DVD. Darin delivers a "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" that swings, as well as a moving ballad, "Canaan." The buttoned-down mind of Bob Newhart gets fine display both with his monologue and in a brilliantly witty sketch which features him with the series' star playing a couple at home watching The Judy Garland Show! There are powerhouse solos from Judy in this episode also, including the hit "More," "Get Me to the Church on Time" (from My Fair Lady), and her classic "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart."

These classic hours with America's most beloved female singing icon continue the award-winning DVDs of Garland's one-and-only TV series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two More Great Garland Shows!, December 18, 2002
By A Customer
Of course I haven't seen this title yet -- as it has yet to be released -- but the manufacturer's web site indicates this DVD will include shows #11 (with Steve Allen, Mel Torme, Jayne Meadows) and #14 (with Bobby Darin, Bob Newhart). Having seen both of these shows from average quality collectors' videotapes, these will be most welcome in the outstanding picture and sound as represented by prior releases in this series.

Highlights include Judy's renditions of "Here's That Rainy Day", "The Party's Over" (w/Torme), "Through The Years", a medley with Bobby Darin and "More"

5.0 out of 5 stars More great Judy, April 1, 2003
Yes, the picture quality does vary more but I'm still thrilled that they are releasing every episode in whatever condition. I loved the overture to show 23; Mort brings great energy to his conducting and the camera work is stunning. I actually clapped when Judy comes on!

I noticed in show 23 the tightrope Judy walks in regards to making herself human and yet always professional. In her mistakes and occasional visible discomfort or just her high strung nature, she seems fragile and uncertain. Then she will recover brilliantly with more heart and soul than a galaxy of lesser stars. Or she will reveal an emotional nuance in the music I hadn't notice before. That tightrope is what made her electric, fascinating and ultimately the most charismatic of stars. She brings you into her performance and then reveals or discovers something new in the artistry of singing.

Finally, make sure you watch the outtakes; in particular, Atcheson Topeka. Her response to a flub made me laugh out loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judy Garland Triumphs, Again!, April 1, 2003
By "dphajjar" (Rye, New York United States) - See all my reviews
The concert show that is on this DVD is superb. Garland, as usual, was terrific. She sang songs from her Hollywood movies with a musical quality reminiscent of her 1960-1962 concert years while on the road. At the end of the concert, she once agains shows pure magic as she finishes with the song, "Once in my Lifetime" dressed as a Puccini-style clown, the same make-up used in the movie The Pirate which she did with Gene Kelly in 1947. It was pure theater, sending chills up anyone spine watching this number, as performed by the greatest singer/entertainer of the 20th century.

The show with Bobby Darin was okay...Musically, he is no match for her. The best number is when Judy does the song "More" as a solo. She just simply soars with this song. In fact, the song fits her like a glove. Look it, Judy Garland can not and should not share the stage with anyone. She is a one-person stage performer. In fact, when she does perform with anyone else, she is the only one on stage that people really look when the cameras are rolling.

This DVD is, though, a must-buy, simply because Judy sings alone in concert form and she is musically at the top of her form.
