Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
It wasn’t so long ago that notebook owners were forced to sacrifice performance for convenience and mobility. Now, with products such as the Sony Vaio PCG-GRZ660 notebook computer, power and portability go hand in hand.

Sporting a potent 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and an impressive 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to a whopping 1,024 MB), the PCG-GRZ660 will effortlessly drive even the most demanding PC-based application. The unit’s 32 MB ATI Mobility Radeon 7500C graphics chipset may have trouble smoothly drawing complex 3-D games and animations but will easily handle everything else. Combine all of the above with a large 40 GB hard disk and a combination DVD-RW/CD-RW drive--through which you can store home movies, watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and burn and play audio CDs--and the PCG-GRZ660 becomes a very versatile and capable machine.

Measuring 1.8 by 12.9 by 10.7 inches, the unit is of average size. It is, however, rather lightweight at 6.9 pounds with one battery or 7.5 pounds with battery and optical drive. Sony has installed a large 15-inch XGA TFT viewing screen (1,024 x 768 resolution) and integrated stereo speakers to enhance your multimedia experience, and an 86-key QWERTY keyboard with electrostatic touchpad to help you better control your applications. Other useful amenities include a Memory Stick media slot, three USB ports, a super-fast IEEE 1394 port for data transfers from peripherals such as digital camcorders, a 56K modem for low-speed Internet and e-mail access, and a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet interface for high-speed connectivity.

The PCG-GRZ660 is preloaded with a broad array of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Money 2003, Adobe Premiere LE, and an impressive variety of audio, video, and photo utilities.

Product Description
The VAIO PCG-GRZ660 is a portable digital workhorse for those looking for desktop-like power all wrapped up in a compact, space-saving notebook design! Create your own digital photo albums, make custom music CDs and connect to your digital camcorder and burn professional-looking videos to DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great notebook, only one drawback, April 18, 2003
By A Customer
This notebook has almost every feature you could ask for. For the sake of brevity I will point out the one weak point (all the other features are first rate):

Sony has equipped this notebook with a nice big 15" screen, but it only has 1024x768 pixels. This is more in line with a 14" screen or a value priced notebook. A 15" screen notebook in this price rang should have 1024x1280 pixels. The quality difference is very noticeable. On most other points (response time, luminescence, contrast) I would rate this screen about average.

If display quality is important to you then this may not be the right notebook for you. Otherwise this notebook is really well featured.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price, February 19, 2003
By John Hu (Minnesota) - See all my reviews
Great features and performance for the price. Can't find cheaper laptop with DVD-R capabilities anywhere. Screen is OK for general use, but gamers and graphic designers may want to opt for the 16" screen with 1600x1200 resolution offered by SONY. So far I have enjoyed this laptop, however there is an annoying hum from the harddrive when the laptop is on. Don't know if it is just mine or common to all PCG-GRZ660? Overall, I recommend this laptop without reservation.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sony VAIO laptop shutdown problem, July 19, 2005
I thought I was buying a top of the line laptop, I love the large display, but that's the last positive thing I have to say about my PCG-GRZ660.

Just over a year of owning it I started experiencing random shutdowns. Now at 1 1/2 years it shuts down constantly. The problem - OVERHEATING. Apparently it's a well known problem, and I can't get any support from Sony. Lookup "Sony VAIO shutdown" online and see all the folks that are experiencing overheating problems.

I'm very disappointed with this laptop and would not recommend a Sony laptop to anyone.

I think I will go back to ACER laptops, they have worked flawlessly in the past.
