Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
It's never easy following up a multi-platinum success, but Canada's Nickelback's latest seem sure to match the sales of the many-million-selling Silver Side Up. The formula remains pretty much the same--nothing fancy, just radio-friendly grunge that lends an appropriately dramatic backing to the powerful and increasingly confident voice of Chad Kroeger. Aside from the fast and punchy opener "Flat on the Floor," the tough, staccato "Because of You," and the Oasis-like "Figured You Out," the band deal exclusively in soft-rock anthems (soft, that is, by 2003’s pulverizing standards). The only real change here lies is in Kroeger's lyrical concerns. Where 2000's The State found him suffering the frustrations of small-town life, now he's tortured by a heavy touring schedule that promotes destructive drug abuse and strains relationships to breaking point. That said, you can't help feeling the ruthlessly analytical Kroeger would turn a visit to the supermarket into a riot of hatred and self-recrimination. For fans of Silver Side Up, Nickelback have delivered the goods once more. --Dominic Wills

5.0 out of 5 stars The best thing I've heard yet from Nickelback, February 5, 2004
By A Customer
I became a Nickelback fan with Silver Side Up. Since then I've aquired their concert DVD, The State, and The Long Road. If Nickelback fans are expecting another Silver Side Up, then don't buy this album, it's not the same. The songs reflect the wild ride that Nickelback has been on since the whirlwind surrounding Silver Side Up. Silver Side Up had a lot of great songs, but in my opinion, the material on the Long Road has more maturity and depth than Silver Side Up. Songs like Figured You Out and Feelin' Way Too Damn Good have both depth and a meloncholy quality that will make this album endure. This album isn't for the occasional rock listener. It's like 80s rock meets 90s edgier music. The music itself is a bit repetitive, although very good. The lyrics are the reason that you must buy this album.

1.0 out of 5 stars Formula rock for the masses, November 11, 2004
By Alex (San Diego) - See all my reviews
Nickleback is Clear Channel's best friend: their music is ordinary, dull, and absolutely defining mainstream. The songs here are all the same, with poor lyrics, and Chad's standard, ordinary singing style. Sorry about using ordinary so many times, it just defines this band so well.
I find it hilarious that "A kid's review" was chosen as a spotlight review, because he/she defines the average radio-listening, Nickleback fan. What I hate about bands like this is that they take away radio time to expose bands that deserve our attention.
Anybody with brains should turn this off and listen to real talent like In Flames. If you must listen to a radio-dominated band, at least listen to A Perfect Circle, Tool, Nine inch nails, Muse, Metallica (pre-St. Anger), or anything elsewith substance. By the way, try looping "Someday" alongside "How You Remind Me," you'll see how Nickleback has produced two almost identical songs, caused by their radio-friendly formulaic song writing skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nay-sayers begone!, February 18, 2004
First of all, let me just say that the people who blatantly insult this record and act like asses usually have NOT listened to it. I've seen a few reviews that weren't in favor of the CD, but they actually listened to it and gave a well-written review with reasons as to WHY they dislike it. Others just say "OMG liek niklbak suxorZ lisen 2 reel muzik liek metalica u jackass!!111q!!1!1!'. They're pathetic.

Now, onto the actual CD. A pretty solid CD, in my opinion. It starts off with an energetic, hard-rocking track, Flat On the Floor. A great way to start the album. After that is Do This Anymore, a great song overall. A great solo, good lyrics and a good tune, just an awesome song all around. After that follows Someday, the album's first single. A ballad-like song, it's not bad but there are better. I won't go through the whole CD, but one other great song that I'd like to point out is Because of You. Possibly the best song on the album, a great song and the lyrics are very well-written.

All fourteen songs are pretty good, and even if you were displeased with Nickelback's Silver Side Up, or were afraid to try because of How You Remind Me, you should still give this CD a listen. Nickelback has improved and have produced a great CD in The Long Road. The nay-sayers here who give this CD one star mostly haven't heard it. Don't let it sway you away from a great album by a band that's not given an honest chance.
