Editorial Reviews

A new VeggieTale character is introduced in the most song-filled video yet from this Christian-lite series that promotes "Sunday morning values, and Saturday morning fun." Madame Blueberry is so blue, even her butlers (Bob and Larry, natch) can't fill her every need. But wait--the giant Stuff-Mart is just opening down the lane--promising joy to those who buy everything (a typical sales pitch: "Of course you don't need an air compressor, but don't you want one?"). Madame Blueberry will learn a hard lesson in being thankful. Bad news: "Silly Songs with Larry" has been canceled. Good news: "Love Songs with Mr. Lunt" has a whopper of a tune in its place. Note: the family picnicking near Stuff-Mart has a strong resemblance to cocreator Phil Vischer's family. --Doug Thomas

Product Description

Why so blue? Because Madame Blueberry wants more stuff. Sure, she has everything she needs -- good friends, plenty of food, a nice treehouse to live in -- but some of her friends have a lot more. Sound familiar? Let your kids spend a little time with Madame Blueberry and the rest of the veggies and they'll learn that "being greedy makes you grumpy -- but a thankful heart is a happy heart!" The 9th original VeggieTales video from the award-winning artists at Big Idea Productions, Madame Blueberry teaches kids that God wants us to be thankful for what we have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for any age!, June 15, 2000
By A Customer
This is one of the better installments in the Veggie Tales series. Madame Blueberry learns a valuable lesson about greed. She isn't happy and thinks it's because she doesn't have enough stuff. Then, a Stuff-Mart (a great Wal-Mart knock-off) opens up down the road. Through Madame Blueberry's quest for more stuff she realizes that all the stuff in the world won't make her happy. What she wants is a happy and thankful heart. She realizes this a little too late and loses her treehouse but is still thankful for the lesson she learned. In this age of "gotta have it all", this is a great way to show kids that having a lot of "stuff" won't buy happiness. Through excellent writing and some great songs, including the Stuff-Mart rap, the people at Big Idea have created another video that is multi-generational. Even adults will come away thinking about the need for "stuff". This video also includes the song, My Cheeseburger, a temporary replacement to the Silly Songs with Larry. Be sure to listen during the scene in the Stuff-Mart food court for the muzak version. Too funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Be Thankful this Veggie Tale is Here, December 30, 2000

Of the several Veggie Tales we currently own, this is our personal favorite, and for good reason. Madame Blueberry is a VERY blue berry -- so absorbed in her wish for material things that she doesn't appreciate all the good things that she already has, a good home, good friends, and the everyday blessings of life around her. It takes a trip to the "StuffMart" (a wonderful send-up on the discount shopping mega-malls that infest our society) and her observations of two small children for her to see that life is more than aquiring things. As the moral of the story says, a thankful heart is a happy heart.

This is a great video for the age 5 to 11 set. All the usual Veggie Tale characters are here, including Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, and Junior Asparagus. The animation is, as in every Veggie Tale, a visual treat that holds the interest of both children and adults. There are sly sight gags and a silly, campy pace to the voice characterizations. But best of all in this video is the music. The prayer song of the two children -- "I thank God for this day ..." is marvelous in its power and simplicity, and one that our child now sings at the dinner table. Doggone it, I know the words too, and I sing along. The hip-hop rendition of the StuffMart advertising jingle is downright funny: what more evidence do you need to know that conspicuous consumption is wrong? And Mr. Lunt's rendition of the "Cheeseburger Love Song" is hilarious.

The lesson of this video is delivered with a light touch. It's religious without being preachy or proselytizing. We need more videos like this. I'm betting that even the StuffMart will have them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Silly Video that teaches good lesson!, March 27, 2000
By A Customer
I think this is one of the best Veggie Tales videos! I loved the songs, 'I'm so blue', and 'A thankful Heart'. It is set in France and the story is really funny. I loved Madame Blueberry, a very blue berry because she doesn't have all that she wants. Bob and Larry are her butlers. A store opens near her called the Stuff Mart and it is her dream come true. It's funny to see what happens to her house when she brings home too much stuff! Great movie!
