4.0 out of 5 stars Not the same as the DVD but still hilarious, December 24, 2005
This review is from: Dress to Kill (Audio CD)
This isn't the same record as the on the DVD. If you're choosing between them, I would definitely recommend the DVD: Eddie is playing for a bigger audience, the crowd is more receptive, and he's a bit more energetic. Since the DVD was for a live HBO special, you can tell that everyone knows the stakes are higher, and Eddie performs brilliantly. The DVD may also be advantageous becaus Eddie is a very physical comedian, and fully appreciating jokes oftentimes requires seeing him.

On the other hand, this album is good in its own right. It's mostly the same material (some chunks are left out from the DVD), and I found it interesting to see him reperform jokes. He's said in interviews that because of his dyslexia, he never writes his material down, so when he performs the same bit, it's always in slightly different language. Fans know that Eddie is always spinning at an extremely fast mental speeed, and jokes are always going to get lost between the cracks. I would definitely recommend this to fans, because I now understand so many jokes that I didn't quite hear or quite understand from the DVD.

The material is some of the best that Eddie has ever produced. Choose one, perhaps, the CD or the DVD, but don't let this performance slip through your fingers!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best if you haven't seen the HBO show, November 30, 2004
The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's not the same show I saw on HBO (and I'm assuming is on the DVD) The show is still incredibly funny, but don't buy it unprepared. The "cake or death" bit isn't on this at all, but there are a few items here that weren't on the televised show. You can tell that this show was meant to be the "audio" version as Eddie describes things in word that he acted out on stage. (I thought one of the funniest bits was when the Pilgrims weren't meeting the American Indians and he did the gesture with his hands talking about their headpieces. He says it in this one) That also reminds me... the Engelbert Humperdinck is not in this one at all. Which makes sense, but man that was hilarious!

This is still incredibly funny, but if you've watched the HBO show over and over and are looking for something listen to in the car... the differences between this show and that might leave you slightly disappointed. I'm looking forward to either the next HBO showing or buying the DVD so that I can listen to that audio track in the car.

(Also, I don't mean this to be a completely negative review. I understand the reason for the changes, but wanted this to be more of a warning. This is still a great CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars He's the best!!!, May 17, 2003

It is not enough to own the DVD of this wonderful performer, at least for me I want a copy to carry in the car. Eddie Izzard's mind is a great companion as I drive and is far superior to anything on radio. His humor never grows stale and one can listen to this award winner many times over. Highly recommended!
