Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Formed in 1972, Area was the single most influential Italian progressive rock band of the era. Perhaps as well known for their leftist politics as for their unique blend of progressive rock, free jazz and Mediterranean folk music, these recordings capture Area at the height of their creative prowess. The avant-grade vocals of singer Demetrio Stratos also contributed to the bands unique sound. This boxset containing their first 4 albums Ardeit Macht Frei, Caution Radiation Area, Crac and Areazione. Includes the original covers, lyrics and liner notes by the well-known Italian music journalist Riccardo Bertoncelli.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Four BEST... well almost!, May 5, 2004
By Carl Johnson "budbear_5000" (Detroit, MI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Area is often equated with being like the Frank Zappa of Europe. I often thought there were two kinds of prog kids when I was growning up (late sixties- through the seventies). Actually three camps: One liked Zappa, one liked Area (italian) and others did NOT like that wild fusion stuff (Smile)! Actually there were four camps because some liked both groups!

This deluxe set of CD's really took me home when I first got it about a year ago. It was like openning the albums for the first time with the rush and childlike enthusiasm that took me over in the 70's. It was/is fantistic!

Don't misread what I am saying. Area was a seventies band that went WAY beyond what other bands did (except Canterbury bands and a few others). This is their first four albums and possibly their best work next to Maledetti.
Area, FOR ME, is the best prog rock/ Jazz-fusion band there ever was. The complexities in their music, yet sometimes humorous accessability, is really unsurpassed by any other band.
But if you do not know this band, I would try to download what you can to hear them before you buy because.... they can be pretty strange (smile)!

All the posters and inserted botton... things are in there just like the original albums had! You will still want this collection of their first four albums on CD because the art work, the band pictures AND the music DO go together. And the 24 bit remaster REALLY does sound "Oh so good"! Unsurpassed spin!
