About the Actor
Janet Rice Davis was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where music has always been an integral part of her family life. Although Janet's formal musical training was primarily in the classical field, she was fascinated with the stringed instruments, particularly those involved with folk and bluegrass music. In college she played the guitar and sang as a folk and blues musician in many of the Austin clubs, learning from such greats as Lightning Hopkins, Janis Joplin, and other well-known musicians, who played the same clubs. Today, Janet is primarily known as a bluegrass and five-string banjo specialist.

In this straightforward, easy to understand video for five-string bluegrass banjo, Janet Davis teaches tuning, how to read tablature, roll patterns, chords, licks, and other basic information needed to play bluegrass and melodic-style banjo. Janet explains the first 22 lessons from the book of the same title and demonstrates examples both slowly and at regular speed. This 60-minute video can be used by itself to learn by ear, or with the tablature found in the companion book. The companion book for this video may be purchased separately. Note: The DVD teaches through Lesson 22. For the remaining Lessons, the CD must be purchased to hear those licks.

Janet Davis book, CD, DVD are excellent sources for learning how to play the 5 string banjo. A suggestion for video techniques that would be extremely helpful would be to position the camera so the the views would show the left hand with the right hand by shooting over the left or right shoulder or above the hands to show the movement from right to left and vice versa that corresponds with the person playing or viewing, following the video. Skeptical am I when it comes to buying self teaching books and dvd's. I am surprisingly happy with the book and dvd. Janet Davis is a teacher (I would suspect not only of banjo) with a great manner. My only wish is that the dvd were longer to touch on some of the other points of the book(which I am muddling through.) The dvd I think was copied from an old vhs due to the fact that Ms. Davis refers to time on the tape several times, but the quality is still good. I would highly recommend this item for the beginner banjo student.

good starting video, use with it with the book and had no problems, the book alone has hard to do later with out the video. helped to know what the songs should sound like
