Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Huun-Huur-Tu – "sun propeller" – is a Tuvan expression describing the first of the rising sun's rays as they shoot up from behind the mountains down, down there, where the steppe and the mountains meet with the sky.

Limitless steppes, cloud-clad mountains, ancient sun, and thousands and thousands of years of history of nomadic horsemen– these are Tuva. The sounds of the steppe, the cries of the animals, the songs of the birds, the chanting of the spirits – these are Huun-Huur-Tu.

In their latest release, Huun-Huur-Tu Live 1 and Live2, four musicians using traditional Tuvan overtone singing and traditional instruments bring to us the ancient voices of the past.

Recorded live in Russia (April, 2001), Huun-Huur-Tu Live1 and Live 2 capture the magic of the band’s live sound while featuring the most popular songs from the band’s previous studio albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Live, the first half, April 28, 2003

Both Huun Huur Tu Live 1 and 2 are excellent recordings for me because I was recently forced to miss their most recent concert appearance near me. I just got both of these discs within the last month or so, and they made me bummed that I missed the recent show (because they are so good), but also very happy that such an excellent concert document exists.

While various Tibetan styles of throat-singing are more well-known to the masses, Tuvan throat-singing is just as much of a marvel and a joy to experience, and it sounds completely different.

The biggest selling point of these 2 live discs is probably that if you are already a Huun Huur Tu fan, Live 1 and 2 are great companion discs to their studio albums that you already own. On the other hand, if you are totally new to this group (and/or Tuvan throat-singing in general), these 2 live discs are a great sampler of HHT's repertoire, and you could use these discs to cross-reference your favorite songs here with their studio albums and decide which of those you'd like to buy next.

In terms of specifics, tracks #'s 3 and 9 contain 2 of the greatest examples of solo Tuvan singing on record. Tracks #5 illustrates just how much these guys have going on in terms of "playing instruments". They aren't "just singers". This being one of the things that has bothered me about hearing peoples comments about them in the past. There is nothing "primitive" about the musicality these guys possess, whether we're talking about vocals or musicianship.

All In all though, it's the emotional power that gets you about this music. Maybe for some people, HHT is just about the novelty of hearing the overtone singing, but their music goes way beyond that technical aspect. These guys have a gift for melody that can bring you to tears and take you outside of yourself. That's what their music is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!, April 19, 2003
These guys are amazing! I have never heard anything like it and i didn't know the human throat could make such original sounds like these. The singing really gives off positve vibrations and feels great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music !, February 20, 2004
When you put this cd on you get transported to another world, you get a feeling of an ancient and powerful world.
Its not hard to imagine the wide open spaces of the Mongolian landscape, the arching blue sky, strong winds and powerful thundering horses and rivers.
The clearly distinguishable aspects of this music is the throat singing, the beautiful 'horsehead violin', and the powerful rhythmic beats.

Although a friend from monglia, when hearing the cd, called it 'too' russian.
