These wireless headphones were designed to meet the infrared requirements of the Sony MDR-DS5100 Advanced Headphone System with DTS Digital Surround Sound (sold separately). This additional pair of headphones will enable another person to listen via the wireless system.
The high power infrared transmitter has separate FM carriers for a wide bandwidth, high channel separation. The MDR-IF5000s have a transmission range of thirty-three feet. They also receive a maximum 900 transmission angle, ensuring that you have uninterrupted listening as you move around the room. The headband is self-adjusting and sports a snug-fitting wide band. The headphones require two AA batteries. If you use an optional alkaline battery, you can expect an impressive ninety hours of use; the included NiCad batteries will get you thirty hours of use.
The headphones are lightweight and comfortable, delivering quality sound. Sony has installed several technical features to the headphones to ensure a quality listening experience. The over-sized forty millimeter drive units deliver deep bass, low distortion and a wide frequency response range (12 - 24,000 Hz). Neodymium magnets give the headphones maximum energy at a minimal size and weight. The long-stroke 125m polyester film diaphragms offer low distortion and resists bending and flexing. The open-air design allows for ambient noise to enter the ear, a safe and observant feature. The headphone's color is a modern silver and black.

The MDR-IF5000 headphones have oversized 40mm drivers and neodymium magnets that are larger than most headphones for deeper bass response in a compact unit. The self-adjusting headband and soft cloth ear cushions provide added comfort for extended wear.Long-stroke 12-?m polyester film diaphragms feature low mass for superb transient response while new diaphragm shape resists bending and flexing, for low distortion. BTL headphone amplifier eliminates the coupling capacitor for enhanced bass. Oxygen-free copper internal wiring minimizes transmission loss and automatic power switch conserves battery life. These headphones feature a separate balance control and single volume control that conveniently adjusts the volume for both channels. Please note that these headphones cannot be used without an infrared transmitter.
