Product Description
Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags hold information that can be read and written wirelessly. The tags have potential for many applications but have so far failed to gain mass acceptance. This study describes the AutoID standards initiative for RFID tags, and looks at the technology with a view to its potential for commercialization by IT services firms. It then goes on to describe a number of field tests of RFID, based on the AutoID standards. In conclusion, the study makes recommendations for IT services firms considering working within the AutoID framework, and draws conclusions for RFID as a mobility solution. James Weir, IDC senior research analyst, believes that; "IT services firms should lead the way in exploiting the AutoID standards. They are uniquely positioned to bring together the technical and process expertise to develop profitable business models based on RFID."
