Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

What's new is that the Mystery Machine finally comes equipped with seatbelts, not to mention the newly installed global positioning system. The updated WB series also features a new theme song. But Scooby fans needn't cringe: the basics are still here. Shaggy's still goofy, Scooby's still scared, and the "ghosts" are actually people with devious agendas. In these four 20-minute episodes from the 2002-2003 season, the gang finds themselves snowboarding with Chris Klug (in a cameo voice), hanging with scientists at a NASA-like facility, jetting to a museum in Costa Rica, and making the Mardi Gras scene in New Orleans. Along the way they encounter a snow monster, alien baby, "gigantisaurus," and the feuding Leland brothers, carrying their Civil War grudge beyond the grave. Casey Kasem continues his duties as Shaggy and new cast and guest voices include TV veterans Mindy Cohn, Hector Elizondo, Lauren Tom, and the ubiquitous voice artist Jim Cummings. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Product Description

Scooby-Doo and the gang investigate mysteries at a skateboarding contest, a movie set in Costa Rica, a rocket launch pad, and a New Orleans cemetery.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first new Scooby series in over 15 years!, August 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: What's New Scooby-Doo, Vol. 1 - Space Ape at the Cape (DVD)
This show is awesome. After over 15 years it is about time Scooby got a new show. All the episodes on this DVD are great. The first episode is a really good. It has a groovy plot idea, making Fred and Velma get out of the way so Daphne can do some detective work. It wouldn't be good for alot of episodes, because Fred and Velma rock, but it worked. Space Ape at the Cape is a really good episode with Velma winning a Nasa contest. It is great for Velma fans. The alien is creepy looking and the title is an important clue. 3-D Struction is good too. A dinosaur spirit comes to haunt the museum that stole his bones. Scooby and the gang are on the case. Velma also explains why she doesn't wear make up and keeps her "natural look". And the last episode is by far the best. Lots of classic Scooby stuff. Creepy ghosts, creepy suspects, creepy Supermarket of the Supernatural. It also has stuff like Scooby acting out what he is trying to say(1st word bat wings!?) and Daphne gets kidnapped. This TV show rocks! Don't forget, the second season starts this fall on Kids WB!

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been a Season Box Set, June 13, 2004
This review is from: What's New Scooby-Doo, Vol. 1 - Space Ape at the Cape (DVD)
I have the Scooby Doo Golden Collection and I think it's great to have loads of Scooby Doo episodes together in one collection. These new episodes are great but giving us 4 at a time is not a good idea and I really think Warner would have been better off investing their time (as we would invest our money) in a First Season Box Set.

What we are given for now are four episodes running 22 minutes each. A couple of them have below average stories but the other two are up to scratch. The animation and color pallet are very bright and modern as is the soundtrack which incorporates more original music than the old school shows (which tended to re-use temp scores and source music over and over) but manages to work in familiar themes.

For Scooby Doo purists there is no sacrilege here. Shaggy and Scooby/Fred are performed by Casey Kasem and Frank Welker so there's not too much of a divide between this and old school to distance older fans from the new show.

For what it is, the DVD presents the show absolutely flawlessly in 1.33:1 full frame with pretty active Dolby 2.0 surround and some minimal fluff extras. Buy it cheap and hope for a Season Box Set.
