The Wagner Data Collection moisture meter is a far cry from the old analog, two-pin moisture readers were used to seeing. First of all, the pins are gone, and instead, electromagnetic waves measure moisture content of rough or finish-grade wood, anywhere from 5- to 30-percent. The manufacturer says the meter is best suited for wood thicknesses from 3/4-inch to 1-1/2 inches, though when we tried one in our warehouse, we had no trouble getting a reading on stouter pieces of pine. The meters memory will store up to 50 moisture readings for review, the high and low readings as well as an average--all great features for those in the quality control field. Theres more wood in the world than pine, of course, and the included code book provides the numbers for the user to program in a huge variety of woods, including purpleheart, mahogany, the range of oaks, and more. Its compact, lightweight and easy to use.
