Generally, Compaq's Presario S4000nx series of desktop computers is intended for light- to medium-use situations where cost is the overriding factor. However, the flagship of the S4000nx line, the Presario S4300nx Desktop PC, raises the performance bar substantially while maintaining a degree of affordability. You won't want to use it for complex graphics or gaming without adding a dedicated 3-D video card, but otherwise the Presario S4300nx is ready for most home, home office, and many business applications.

The Presario S4300nx is powered by a fast but sensibly priced 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 CPU with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading is a new Intel-developed process that allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thus boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking). Compaq has added a generous 512 MB PC2100 DRR SDRAM memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. To store and transfer your data, the unit is equipped with an extremely large 120 GB hard disk, a convenient 3.5-inch floppy disk drive, and a combination CD-RW/DVD drive that supports CD burning and playing and DVD playback but does not permit DVD writing.

The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port, a whopping half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, and two FireWire ports for fast data uploads from external devices such as digital camcorders. In its stock form, the Presario S4300nx does not permit wireless communication.

The impressive bundled software package features Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works, Microsoft Money 2003 Standard and Intuit Quicken Financial Center with Quicken New Users Edition 2003. Monitor and speakers are sold separately.
