Biography

The eclectic worldbeat/folk-rock outfit Poi Dog Pondering were formed in Waikiki by vocalist/guitarist Frank Orrall, violinist/vocalist Susan Voelz, and multi-instrumentalist Dave "Max" Crawford, the only constants in the group's history; sometimes swelling to upwards of ten members, the band has seen numerous personnel shifts. Named in part for a Hawaiian expression meaning "mutt," Poi Dog… Read more in Amazon's Poi Dog Pondering Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Poi Dog Pondering founder and only constant member Frank Orrall has rarely stood still since forming his group in Hawaii in 1986. He's maneuvered his band through nearly as many different cities as line-up changes. The eclectic outfit has gradually found its niche somewhere between the easygoing acoustic rock of the Dave Matthews Band and the pan-American rock and R&B fusion of Santana. Its ninth album is typically overflowing with ideas and energy, as the fifth line-up of Poi Dog Pondering takes up the experimental bent of 1999's Natural Thing, mixing strains of folk, electronic music, and soul into uplifting tracks like "A Love Rains Down" and "Keep the Faith." --Aidin Vaziri

5.0 out of 5 stars Another step in the evolution of PdP, July 5, 2003
By Rick B. (Hampshire, IL USA) - See all my reviews
I raced out to buy In Seed Comes Fruit on the day of its release, and I was not disappointed. Frank Orrall has steered the band into a more soulful dance groove than in past releases. Orrall has let his bandmates contribute much to this effort, and lead vocal duty is shared. "Had I Known" and "You Move Me" start the disc out strong. "Keep the Faith" is a powerful song featuring moving voice samples from Orrall's dad and a family friend who had lost her husband--it's one of the best tracks on the disc. In Seed Comes Fruit is a disc that you can crank up and dance..., or put it on softer and provide a soundtrack to a simple gathering of friends or dinner party, something you don't find with most dance music. If you liked PdP's discs Pomegranate and Natural Thing, you're gonna love this! And if you find Poi coming to your town, do yourself a favor and go see them. They're even better live and a great night out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CD I've bought this year, November 20, 2003
By Martha Ann Selby (Austin, TX. United States) - See all my reviews
I'm new to Poi Dog Pondering -- I heard a track from "In Seed Comes Fruit" on KUT here in Austin one morning, and bought it. I've played nothing else in my car for a month! The vocals are just amazing -- beautiful arrangements, dissonant in places -- and I love the flute and vibes on this album. I'm giving it as a gift this year to all my music-loving friends. It's moving, upbeat, great for dancing or just laidback listening.
