Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Taste and consistency are not often virtues lauded by critics. Amid the constant stream of media noise, jazz writers seem to require the constant shock of "new" and aggressive sounds to attract our notice. So it would be easy to overlook another album of tasteful blues-drenched instrumentals from Jeff Golub if only it wasn't so darned good. Once again his originals reflect his influences, from Ramsey Lewis ("Boom Boom") to the Crusaders ("Back Home"), while maintaining the distinctive sound he has refined through this his eighth CD. It is still surprising how he manages to hew to the smooth jazz format while slipping in hip covers like Jesse Winchester's "Isn't That So" (sung by Marc Cohen) and the Ohio Players' "Skin Tight." What is no longer surprising is that we can always count on the guitarist to deliver just what the title promises--heaping amounts of soul. If smooth jazz is mood music then this certainly qualifies. But unlike the anonymous anodynes that pervade the genre, Soul Sessions employs the glory of the guitar and the power of the groove to create a mood that will lift your heart while it moves your hips. --Michael Ross

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best !, September 19, 2003
By Howard Riesel (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having all of Jeff's CD's, I ask myself: What's next? I picked up
Soul Sessions last week and I can't describe the amazing talent.
I find most blues players repetitive and predictable. Jeff combines the elements of blues, soul, funk, smooth jazz in such a
way that sets him apart from the rest. My favorite tracks are
Back Home, Vibrolux, Playin It Cool. The whole disc is great
driving music. Having seen Jeff live is the ultimate experience,
and the live feel he creates on this disc is a close second.
As a guitar player, Jeff is in a league of his own. My CD collection is comprised of 95% smooth jazz guitarists. Given the
pool of overall amazing talent out there, this is a great CD and
well worth adding to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Soul Sessions" Music for the Soul., December 4, 2003
By Vance McKee (Cleveland, OH) - See all my reviews
Sit down, relax, and take a close listen to this disc. This is music reminiscent of the jazz greats of the sixties, with Jeff's fretprints all over it. I was fortunate enough to hear Jeff "live" in Chicago (before this was released) where he opened his set with the first track "BOOM BOOM". WOW! At first listen of the entire disc, I felt it was right there with all of Jeff's releases. But then, as I listened again and again, I was knocked out by his playing. On tracks like "Isn't That So" and "Can't Let You Go", he isn't the instrument on the track, he is the other voice. His playing as emotional and soulful the vocals. Pick this one up, then sit down and listen to a REAL guitarist, a jazz great, and an album that would be a fine addition to any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, November 28, 2003
I am a big fan of this artist. Soul Sessions is Jeff's best work to date. My favorite track is "Back Home." Other great cuts are "Can't Let You Go" with guest vocals from Steve Perry and "Vibrolux." This is a great cd to drive to or unwind to. If you are a guitar player, Jeff's amazing vibrato and tone shows he has complete control. He is a monster player! Soul Sessions has some great grooves and a great sense of melody. PicK up this cd and check out his past works as well!
