Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Go for gold in picture size and picture quality, too, with Philips' 60-inch, high-tech-fortified 60PW9383 widescreen projection television. This high-definition set is capable of producing crisp, nuanced HDTV signals in all their glory: full 1080i resolution via a digital set-top box (not included). Progressive-scan DVD players are also prime source components for this set; display format up-conversion makes sure you're seeing the best image possible, regardless of the source. The 60PW9383 was designed and constructed with the latest projection technology for rich, seamless presentations--and it goes a long way toward handling your home-theater audio requirements, too.

Philips' 35-point convergence brings with it the accuracy of digital technology for flawless convergence of red, green, and blue electron guns and a superb picture with no colored haloes. Philips HD Optics produces detailed HD resolution through cutting-edge processing and display technology, including a wideband video amplifier, micro phosphor CRTs, hybrid projection lenses, a first-surface mirror (for more direct light transmission), and the set's fine-pitched lenticular screen. A feature called Auto IntelliSense Focus automatically adjusts picture convergence at the push of a button.

If a video image remains stationary, it can eventually burn a permanent after-image into the screen. Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation (APAC) periodically shifts your television picture in increments that are tiny but still large enough to blur image retention. Active Control performs continuous picture analysis and maintains control of Automatic Digital Noise Reduction and auto sharpness. A three-line digital comb filter gives you Improved chroma/luminance separation over standard two-line glass comb filters for a difference you can really see.

Eye Fidelity gives you a choice between two different scanning techniques: progressive and interlaced scanning. Progressive scanning doubles the number of visible picture lines per field by displaying all picture frame lines at once, eliminating line flicker. Interlaced mode reduces annoying motion artifacts and helps smooth jagged lines sometimes seen on images of curved and angled surfaces.

The set's double-window, dual-tuner picture-in-picture feature splits the screen into two independent halves, letting you do everything from watching two shows simultaneously to watching one while surfing the other, or scanning channels while keeping an eye on video input one, two, or three.

The set uses two-way stereo speakers and also features an auto volume limiter to minimize drastic level changes between, say, a TV program and its commercials. A center-channel speaker input lets you use the set as a center--no bulky or costly center-channel required--and a rear-panel subwoofer output makes it easy to hook up a powered sub for deeper-than-deep bass effects or low-end musical authenticity.

A 15-watts-per-channel sound system offers both Virtual Dolby Surround and Incredible Surround, processing circuitry that produces the sensation of surround sound without the hassle of installing additional rear speakers.

Other connections include three each composite- and S-video inputs, two component-video inputs (one HD, one standard), and a DVI direct digital input for use with a compatible DTV set-top box or other DVI device. A set of audio/video outputs lets you integrate the TV with your stereo or surround receiver, and a set of side-mounted AV inputs simplifies hookup of a camcorder, gaming console, or VCR.

The 60PW9383's protective screen filter helps prevent accidental damage to the delicate front lenticular screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful bargain., March 11, 2004
I just received this set on 3/9 and couldn't be happier. Personally, I think Philips makes the best looking projection sets. As far as the picture, regular cable channels look any where from good to ok...but they looked that way on my 27" Sony, too. On the HD channels, the picture is simply wonderful. This set also has some really nice features, like DVI high definition terminal connection, subwoofer output, and the ability to use the tv's own speakers (which are good) as the center channel. It also has an auto convergence feature, as well the ability to adjust convergence manually. For $1,800.00 + free delivery and no tax, it's a great bargain. Instead of a smaller plasma, buy this set and use the money you saved to take the family to Disney! :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked two months, down four months and counting!!!, June 23, 2004
By A Paul Griffin (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
Worked OK for about two months then the picture folded up and completely vanished. Philips refered us to a local shop which came promptly, unfortunately a defective part would take about 4 weeks to get. After four weeks, it was expected in another two weeks. Then another week. Then another week. After the shop e-mailed Philips and got no response they gave up checking, I started calling Philips. That was a month ago. Each week Philips tells me the part will arrive next week (well, there was one time that the part was arriving that day, but then the next day it wasn't there, so it would be another week).

So Philips somehow keeps manufacturing and selling this model, but they don't have the part to fix my defective set--after almost four months. How do they do it?

For an item that costs thousands, manufacturers should provide better support than this. There won't be any Philips products in my future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great TV from a Solid Company, October 10, 2004
By J. S Thomas "Jethro" (Arlington, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My 32" Sony went out after 10 years and i was on the hunt for a new TV. It had been many years since searching for a television and they have come a long way. Although i had been happy with my sony and was looking at sony tubes the big screens caught my eye. I looked at the Mitsubishi, Sony, Akai, Toshiba, Phillips. I did think the Mits and Sony had the best picture quality for a rear projection and was just about to purchase a 65" Mits for 2,499$ when my wifed noticed a green tag laying next to the Phillips and it was for 1,499$ for the 60". After further help at the store with all the features and hooking up a DVD player to view the picture and an HD box to check out the HD view I was sold. For the price nothing could touch it in quality and size and have been very pleased with the picture quality and sound quality. At my price point im must say im overall pleased but wouldnt we all want the 61" Plasma, dang i dont have 20,000$ to burn, LOL.....
