5.0 out of 5 stars Jeffrey Lewis- It's the Ones Who've Cracked..., October 25, 2003
By idleone "idlekaty" (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews
I have to give it 5 stars because I am un Grande fan de Jeffrey Lewis! This is his second and most recent album to date.
Well I think if you liked the stuff on his first album then you should definately buy this, although I think this is more calm than his first, as there are less loud songs (er obviously). I guess the quieter ones include Alphabet (calm and reflectful), Gold (brilliant), Sea Song (a sort of second album equivilant to "SpringTime", and "You Don't Have to Be a Scientist to Do Experiments on Your Own Heart" (yeah, thoughtful). They're all quite catchy, my favourite is probably Gold, which is a lovely example of his characteristically specific(yet different)lyrics.
I think Graveyard is probably the coolest track on the album, it is just great, and If You Shoot the Head You Kill the Ghoul is a really fun take on zombies attacking the earth (in the style of black-and-white horror movies). "No LSD Tonight" is excellant in his attempt to correct people on the (incorrect) belief that he likes doing acid (after his first album's title song was about a certain experience with the drug).
If you like stuff that's a original and a bit quirky then I think you will enjoy this, and his first album. The lyrics are really the main focus I think, but the tunes are catchy and supportive and it all works very well together. This album sounds less like home-edited, but there is no loss of character or feel to his live style.
Very very great.
He is Great!

Woo Jeff Lewis!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes., December 29, 2007
This isn't one of those artists whose sound on albums matches (or, for many unfortunate artists, rises above) the experience of seeing him live. So you can't get away with just buying this without at least watching some videos or something of his live performances.
With that in mind, this is a great album-- the music is characteristically low-key, with quietly energetic guitar and clever, honest lyrics that are only amplified by that guitar, and that you would only ever find coming out of Jeffrey Lewis. I wish there were more references to NYC in here, but it gets 5 stars anyway, because the obsession with good music about New York from New Yorkers is mine alone.
Basically, you can buy 40 minutes of the equivalent of the most amazing open mic performance you've ever seen, and/or go to his shows and show Jeffrey Lewis & company some love. (No apologies to Amazon: this album will be cheaper right from Jeff, too..)
