Watch movies, listen to MP3 CDs, view digital photos, or review camcorder footage--all from one portable device. The CyberHome CH-LDV 712 puts a world of entertainment at your fingertips, and it comes with everything needed to use it in the car or in home. Its built-in seven-inch widescreen LCD displays your favorite movies in their native aspect ratios and gives you the option to fill the screen with discs formatted in the standard 4:3 TV aspect ratio.

Choose to listen from the unit's built-in stereo speakers or its headphone jack and supplied earbud headphones. Best of all, perhaps, the unit's four-hour battery life gives you enough juice to watch two full-length movies. Full format compatibility includes everything from standard NTSC DVD-Video to PAL- and P-SCAN-formatted discs, audio CD, VCD, SVCD, CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM, JPEG CD, MP3 CD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the CH-LDV 712 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs when used in a home-theater environment. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The player also performs 3:2 pulldown through its progressive-scan output. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Other connections include S-video and composite-video outputs (composite-video is switchable as an input), and a switchable analog audio input/output. An optical digital-audio output lets you hook the player up with an audio/video receiver and multichannel speaker system to enjoy immersive DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround from your discs (optical digital-audio interconnect not included).

What's in the Box
DVD player, headphones, AC adapter, automobile DC power adapter, remote control, stereo analog-audio output cable, composite-video output cable, and a user's manual.

4.0 out of 5 stars A REAL STEAL, August 15, 2003
By Sean Y Lee (ARCADIA, CA USA) - See all my reviews
Having purchased and returned a good number of 7" portable DVD players (Apex, Initial, Mintek), I was slowing coming to the conclusion that there's no such thing as a GOOD $... portable DVD player. Then I came across this little beauty at Amazon.com and decided to give it one more try. I've had the player for about a week now, and I am happy to report that I am most pleasantly surprised by how good this players is. I've seen quite a few movies on this unit and have not experienced any problems.

The CyberHome 712 has all the standard features of your average 7" DVD player (mp3, jpeg, remote control, home/car adapter, AV output & input, Dolby digital & DTS outputs, etc), plus a few other nice extras. What's most unusual is that the outer casing, and the DVD lid/deck are all made of diecast metal, while similar units are made of painted plastic. Although the metal case adds weight to the unit, it also gives it a substantial and robust feel. Another unusual feature for this price range is the progressive scan output (componet cables are included.) That means you can use this player with your HDTV and display your movies in all of their 480P, non-interlaced glory. The rechargeble lithium ion battery has a claimed life of 4 hrs between charges, while other batteries typically claim to have between 2-3 hrs. So far, I've only been able to get about 3 hrs out of each charge, but that's more than enough time for just about any movie.

The player is not without flaws though. The 7" LCD screen is not of the active matrix type, so while it is bright and vibrant at the proper angle, it is difficult to see when you are way off to the side. Also the brightness level returns to the default level every time the unit shuts off, so you will have to re-adjust the screen at the beginning of every movie.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, and would recommend this unit to anymore looking for a quality product at a reasonable price. For the brand conscious folks, Toshiba offers some very nice players at substantially higher prices. For my money, the Cyberhome 712 will do just fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars great bargain that meets my expectations, October 5, 2003
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was looking for the largest size screen that I could afford. I had looked at Apex and Initial brands. I almost purchased the Initial DVD 5820 for just under $200, but missed out on the order deadline.

I'm glad I did, because shortly after that, Amazon listed this Cyberhome at a special price of $275 plus a $50 certificate to be used for a future purchase. That, for me, was the clincher. A 7" screen for a bottom line value of $225!! Sold!

I set the unit up in our minivan, using a Targus case hooked to the arms of the front seat captains chairs and headed to Orlando from Atlantic City. My two little girls were restrained, er.. seated in the back seat at slight angles to the player, which was located dead center. I only had to adjust the tilt of the screen so that they could have optimum viewing. The thing played constantly on our trek down and back with nary a skip. I ran the sound thru our car stereo using a cassette adaptor. I also had an fm feeder with me as a back up.

While in my hotel room, I used the headphones to watch a couple of episodes of Davey Crockett and Faulty Towers while my kids were sleeping.

I personally am quite pleased with the unit overall. I like the fact that it is made of metal as opposed to plastic. Feels more substantial, less delicate. I also like the fact that it plays my video cd's and jpegs. I can now capture home video on my computer, edit it, burn a VCD and play it on my portable DVD player. Awesome!

It is not perfect. You must detatch the battery when using an external power source. Not a major problem for me - maybe it is for you. The screen, while beautiful, is best viewed head on. That is not to say it is not viewable at an angle, the tilt has to be adjusted to compensate. This is why I rated it a 4 instead of a 5. But in terms of my satisfaction, knowing this all before jumping in? I would have given it a 5.
Great unit for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars skeptic at first, September 27, 2003
By Javier J. Gonzalez (Converse, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this unit after reading several reviews. I was skeptical
at first, but decided to take a chance. We were planning a 4 hour trip and needed to entertain my three year old. I ordered thru the
super saver shipping. It arrived sooner than promised, and tracking the item was a breeze. The unit worked perfectly, I purchased a dvd holder/carrier that mounted between the seats of a car. No problems
with skipping/freezing or poor picture. When we got to our hotel room, we then hooked up to the tv and worked without any problems. This unit comes with all the hook-ups needed for nearly all applications, even has input video to play back a camcorder, playstation or x box. great deal for the price, would recommend.
The speakers are a little weak, but works great with headphones or external portable amplified speakers
