Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The Delta Rhythm Boys were not only one of the top black acts of their time, but also played a big role in breaking down color barriers in the entertainment field even while lending a helping hand to the Armed Forces Radio Service from which much of this material hails (now, that’s our kind of patriots!). We’d put their harmonies right up there with the Ink Spots, Mills Brothers and Charioteers, and this CD is one of the only places you’ll hear them, as they’ve been sadly underrepresented on CD. A hot Collectors’ Choice Music exclusive, annotated and with great sound! Includes five tracks cut with Mildred Bailey on the Rockin’ Chair Rhythm show, There’ll Be Some Changes Made; It All Comes Back to Me Now; Give Me Some Skin; Georgia on My Mind, and Bugle Woogie, plus Dry Bones; Jersey Bounce; Trav’lin Light; Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby; Knock Me a Kiss; One O’Clock Jump; Take the A Train (the Delta Rhythm Boys specialized in writing lyrics for the great jazz! instrumentals of the day); Paper Doll; St. Louis Blues; Are You Fer It?; Don’t Get Around Much Anymore; Good News; The House I Live In; It’s Only a Paper Moon, and Just A-Sittin’ and A-Rockin’. 20 tracks, an hour long!

3.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware! Radio Air Checks...., April 2, 2004
By Young Fogie (MPLS, MN United States) - See all my reviews
Unless you have everything else the Delta Rythm Boys have out on disc, I'd say look (carefully) for studio recordings. I didn't realize I was purchasing radio air checks, which, vary markedly in audio quality and recording level. I was really anticipating this arrival, hearing a few studio recordings on AM radio, having been blown away by their rendition of "Take the A Train".
Still, the Delta Rhythm Boys talent is quite evident here, and they do take harmony to another level, utilizing their voices with instument-like phrasing. Yet I feel duped for I wasn't expecting 5 cuts w/Mildred Bailey, and some of the poorer recordings rob you of the whole DRB experience. I would (and will) seek another DRB disc, but will be a more careful shopper.

4.0 out of 5 stars A second opinion..., January 25, 2009
In contrast to the review by Young Fogie, I'd like to put in a pitch in favor of this album... Sometimes it's *nice* to hear the live, radio work. If the studio versions can be heard elsewhere, what's the harm in *also* having live tracks available? I agree the sound quality isn't always top-tier, but it's still a cool historical document of one of the all-time great vocal harmony groups. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Music Guide)
