Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
At this point, Jethro Tull are already over halfway through their fourth decade as an entity, but this 90-minute documentary is a thoroughly entertaining look at frontman Ian Anderson and company's first quarter-century. While only Anderson remains from the original lineup (Tull actually began in '68, DVD title notwithstanding), with guitarist Martin Barre having joined as of their second album, part of the fun comes from watching more than a dozen members past and present coming together at a genteel reunion party to be interviewed and share reminiscences. The DVD is also strong on concert performance and video excerpts, especially those from the band's most successful period (the codpiece-and-minstrelsy '70s stretch that yielded hit records like Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, and Songs from the Wood), in addition to more recent items, including their rehearsals for a 25th anniversary reunion tour. DVD bonus materials feature seven of those performances (including "Teacher," "The Witch's Promise," and "Aqualung") in their entirety. --Sam Graham

4.0 out of 5 stars This DVD Leaves Me With Just A Tempting Taste..., April 23, 2004
By Larry Benson "lingerielarry" (Boca Raton, FL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After reading all the reviews of the DVD I still bought it because there was really no other choice. But putting it all into perspective I have to agree with most of the reviews except that I was left "not satisfied". Why you ask...because there is never a complete performance! What was the producer thinking? Why cut off the second half of every concert performance just to here the bands comments about the reunion? Couldn't the producer find a way to put the commentary AFTER the performance? Great "glimpses" of Tull, but any real fan or anyone else for that matter will feel unsatisfied at the end. I just want to lay back and see Tull in a complete concert perforance!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good anthology for collectors of Tull, February 1, 2004
By K. Ellis "kjjcellis" (Central Coast, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a good anthology of various songs. However, some of the songs are not the entire version (thick as a brick) and others have commentary mixed in (Aqualung) which detracts. Good dvd for collectors of Tull stuff. Not one of my better music dvd's though when compared to recent concert dvd's.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could've been more, February 9, 2004
By Lui G. (New York) - See all my reviews
Just as I managed to find a new copy of the video on VHS a couple of yeqars before, '25th Anniversary' comes out on DVD. For the most part, it was worth the upgrade. Great sound, great picture and great music. It's great seeing a lot of the former members together and interviewed especially Mick Abrahams, Clive Bunker, Barriemore Barlow and John Evan. However it would've been nice to get a few words from Jeffrey Hammond (who is in the video but isn't interviewed) and also get the 70's band members' thoughts on the late John Glascock (R.I.P). Instead we have John and Peggy talking about Eddie Jobson's brief tenure in the band, which was funny but I would've rather have heard about Glascock since he was part of a more important period of Tull.

The videos here are fantastic, but my complaint is why couldn't they have ALL the videos available to be seen alone without the voice-over commentary? I would've loved to see the complete performance of "Nothing Is Easy" from Isle of Wight 1970 and "Minstrel In the Gallery" live in Paris 1975 (the latter would've been great being that there's barely any footage of the mid-70's Tull so it would've been a treat to see concert footage of their over-the-top theatrics). Plus, adding another performance of Tull lip-synching "Witches Promise" as a hidden extra is kind of redundant.

Despite the complaints (as you would expect from any hardcore Tull fan), this is still a good video worth buying. Happy 35th anniversary Tull!
