5.0 out of 5 stars sorry to disappoint all you "real" punk rawkers, October 28, 2005
Truth be told when this album first came out I hated it. I couldnt stand the sound. I loved old MxPx and I knew every song(lyrically and on guitar). Now add 2 years to the mix. Over the two years, my talents, and my ear for talent has grown and been educated. This record is very well produced. Some of you may complain because it doesn't have the bad distortion of andy's guitar on PxPx, but I urge you to see past your lame "punk rawk" rules. Don't be so narrow minded to music. Pop-punk, punk, goth, anything music is a fad. hate to break it to you. conforming against conformity is all punk rock is. no matter if you're into street punk, pop punk, oi punk, celtic punk, doesn't matter. MxPx has changed over the years, because their talents have changed also. And the way I see it, they don't qualify to pop punk or whatever, they really never have. Pop-punk is all about the 3 chord progression, or even 2 chord. Maybe they settled for 4 chords, but so does "real punk". Most pop punk bands don't use minors(chords) either, MxPx has been bringing them for a while. And on top of all this mess that I've typed their live show mixes old and new songs, with the same energy and the same intensity. support the guys. they are awesome. this record is awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars MXPX ROCKS HARDER THAN EVER!, October 17, 2003
By Lori Peoples (Billings, MO United States) - See all my reviews
If you like previous MxPx stuff (and even if you've never heard them before), you will totally love Before Everything & After!

For the people who are just shopping and looking for cool bands to listen to, you will *love* this CD if you enjoy a punk rock beat with nice pop hooks and personal lyrics.

My favorite MxPx record was Life In General, and this definitely moved up to #1. If you like bands like New Found Glory and Good Charlotte who have gotten sort of a reputation for being "trendy" or too "pop," you'll be pleased that MxPx has taken some of their credibility and lent it to Jordan Pundick of NFG and Benji Madden of GC, who helped MxPx rock the Civic Tour this summer.

And for those veteran MxPx fans who are afraid the three boys will go the way of Blink-182 and pander to a younger audience, this is definitely not the case with BE&A. The band's content has matured with their ages (and their fans like me!) so you don't feel like you're stuck in a time warp when the bands you grew up listening to are still writing songs about high school!

All in all, I give this CD *FIVE* stars because, no matter what your level of familiarity is with MxPx, there is something for everyone on this record!

4.0 out of 5 stars MxPxs Best CD in awhile, September 25, 2003
By Mike (Louisiana aka hell) - See all my reviews
Ok this isn't their best CD but it's better than their more recent stuff, keep in mind I love all their CDs. The songs are bit long but that's ok, because this style doesn't really call for short songs. It's very melodious which is what MxPx has always been about. To me the best thing about this CD is that it's actually different from a lot of their other albums but at the same time you can tell its MxPx. As much as I love MxPx they do have a bad habit of making all their albums sound the same, so this is a breath of fresh air. I might be alone in thinking this but it some what reminds me of Green Day's Warning (but I'm one of 5 people who actually enjoyed Warning) Some songs are fast and some are kind of slow, which is good because to make a good CD you need diversity. Some are a bit to slow, like "Quit your life" but nonetheless it's still a pretty song. What I found with this CD is that MxPx actually has the ability to grow and change. If I had to pick one song on here that is my favorite I'd have to say "Well Adjusted" because it's songs like that, that got me into MxPx. If you are new to MxPx I'd start with a CD like "Life in General" but this is still a great CD, if you actually have an open mind and are ok with bands evolving and not doing the same old thing over and over and over again. Which is something that a lot of punk bands have a bad habit of doing, and I thought MxPx was one of those bands, but with this CD they've proven me wrong. Now if you don't like this style of punk rock or "pop punk" that's one thing, I can understand why some people don't like stuff like MxPx and Blink 182 but you can't say this is NOT punk rock just because you don't like it. A lot people will tell you that this is not punk, but anyone who says that obviously doesn't know what they are talking about because there is only one rule to punk rock and that is there are no rules. Judging by this CD I can tell that MxPx knows that all to well.
