Biography

The band profiled in this bio should not be confused with a European duo that is also called the Wayfaring Strangers; that acoustic twosome (which goes back to 1994) consists of British guitarist/singer Neil Grant and German mandolinist/singer Martin Ahrndt, whereas the Wayfaring Strangers profiled in this bio (who are also acoustic-oriented) are an American collective led by violinist/pianist… Read more in Amazon's The Wayfaring Strangers Store

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

On their second album, This Train, the Wayfaring Strangers continue their astounding musical odyssey combining folk, bluegrass, jazz, gospel, and world music into a rich and vibrant tapestry of sound. Three vocalists front the band: the soulful Tracy Bonham, the earthy Ruth Ungar and the ethereal Aoife O'Donovan. Equally extraordinary are the instrumentalists: Matt Glaser, Tony Trischka, Laszlo Gardony, Jamey Haddad, John McGann & Jim Whitney. "Bluegrass and jazz have disparate vocabularies, but they share moods of introspection and flamboyance that the Wayfaring Strangers ingeniously pulled together."--The New York Times. The Wayfaring Strangers are Matt Glaser, Tracy Bonham, Tony Trischka, Laszlo Gardony, Jamey Haddad, John McGann, Ruth Ungar, Aoife O'Donovan, Jim Whitney, with guest artists Darol Anger, Steve Gorn, Jay Ungar, Molly Mason, Andy Statman, Bruce Molsky and others.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a find!, September 18, 2003
By william r. jacobs (Cincinnati, OH. United States) - See all my reviews
This is a fabulous second disc by a fabulous group of highly talented, innovative, and creative musicians and singers. What makes this disc so special is the seemless blend of folk, jazz, and even klezmer influences that feels totally right all the time. Thus old favorites, such as This Train, get a new and evocative new feel. The instrumentalists are tops, and the biggest thrill of all is three--count 'em, three!--female vocalists, all of whom shine whether in solo or in harmony.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!! Aoife O'Donovan is superb! Great harmonies too, August 11, 2004
This CD is incredible. It has a jazz beat with bluegrass harmony - an amazing mesh of musical styles. I would love to see these same three ladies stick around for a third album. Also, it would be great if the toured more frequently.

3.0 out of 5 stars an interesting mix, March 9, 2004
By M. C. Myers (La Mesa, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Wayfaring Strangers draws from a wide range of traditions, mainly bluegrass and jazz, as well as klezmer, to create a very well-crafted album. Unfortunately, this sometimes contributes to a labored feel on some of the songs, including the title track. But the CD has some great moments as well, especially the soulful "Who'll Sing for Me?" All three vocalists are top-notch, as well. The Wayfaring Strangers bring a lot to the bluegrass table, and the album should be commended.

I was drawn to a passage of the 7+ min "Cluck Old Hen" which has some fine jazzgrass
