4.0 out of 5 stars Getting Into The Groove, April 7, 2004
By Marc200 (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
Over the years, Incognito has benefited greatly from the herculean vocal talents of Maysa Leak and Jocelyn Brown. That is probably why "100 Degrees and Rising" (featuring neither Maysa or Jocelyn) is their weakest effort and "No Time Like The Future" (featuring both divas) is their strongest. Bluey's grooves can become monotonous -- all groove and no substance -- without a distinctive voice to anchor the proceedings. So "Who Needs Love" (featuring neither Jocelyn nor Maysa) contains a few surprises. The highlight is STONE COLD HEART a smooth samba of a summer breeze that is capped with Joy Malcolm's aching vocal. Up-and-comer Kelli Sae adds spice to both the funky, Curtis Mayfield-esque PEOPLE AT THE TOP and the retro-soulful DON'T BE A FOOL. Likewise, Joy Rose livens up both CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD, with a neo-soul swagger similar to Jill Scott, and the club-stomper MORNING SUN which has already found its way onto several dance music compilations. Overall, "Who Needs Love" is very listenable and makes a strong case for Incognito as being more than the sum of its parts.

4.0 out of 5 stars better than some of their other albums, July 3, 2005
By Sinitta (Germany) - See all my reviews
I used to like Incognito with their early hits and album, but then lost interest, because the albums didn't convince me anymore. After a longer pause, I tried this one and it is really nice and mellow with the wonderful voice of JOY ROSE who should have a solo record too !:) Very good choice :) Kelli Sae is on it too. It's Incognito as you know it - one of their better albums though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Bluey Masterpiece, January 4, 2004
I didn't get the previous Incognito cd that was released only in Europe, so it's been about five years since my ears have been blessed by new Incognito grooves. WNL is a great addition to the Incognito oeuvre.

The music is five-star material and the lyrics are more thoughtful than a year's worth of top-ten pop songs. Where this CD falls a bit short is in the vocal fireworks. All the singers do a great job on all the songs, but none of the songs feature what I would consider a standout vocal performance. Incognito CDs have always had at least one explosive vocal performance on every album: Always There, Still A Friend of Mine, Labour of Love, etc. WHO NEEDS LOVE is missing that one song whose singing makes your ears dance. All very good, none electrifying, although the title track comes very very close.

That said, the music is typical Bluey excellence, which is enough to merit four stars. Next time, Bluey, get Maysa for at least one track. And why are there three discreet USA versions of this disc? I feel cheated because I was such a fan I bought the 13-track version because it was released first, but now I see this 14-track version. What's up with that?
