had the joy of listening to Helen play in the intimate surroundings of the Folly Theater in downtown Kansas City a couple nights ago, with the Steve Turre quarter, and she sparkled. Accompanied very artfully, with nice fills and texture, and really took off when she had the lead. Played a wide variety of styles as the quartet danced around the jazz map, and she raised the hair on the back of my neck with a number of dazzling solos, and yet was just as effective when playing soft and subtle. A marvelous technician and plays with a real fire and energy. Can't wait to hear more, and will surely make it a point to hear her when she comes to town again. her CD is every bit as enjoyable (except you can't see her face light up :D )

A friend told me about a local concert in LA that Helen Sung was having. I went without knowing what to expect, and left without regretting one moment of it. I wouldn't consider myself a Jazz guru but I'd have to say that Helen Sung's music possesses a natural "easy listening" quality that is not only entertaining but relaxing as well. The cd is nothing too abstract for a less experienced listener such as myself, but challenging enough to keep my musical background interested.

I was even fortunate enough to meet her and have her sign the CD. She's a really nice person and makes fantastic music. I heard her practice before the concert - fantastic.
