Biography

Dan Tyminski was born in 1967 in Rutland, VT. He was exposed to down-home country and traditional bluegrass music at an early age. His first instrument was a mandolin that belonged to his big brother, and over the years Tyminski also mastered the banjo and learned to hold his own as a vocalist. The Green Mountain Bluegrass Band was Tyminski's first step into the professional music world. He was an… Read more in Amazon's Dan Tyminski Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

As a veteran of Alison Krauss & Union Station and the Lonesome River Band (not to mention countless country and bluegrass recording sessions), Dan Tyminski had certainly paid his dues before his spot on the O Brother soundtrack brought him worldwide acclaim. The erstwhile Soggy Bottom Boy frontman issued his solo debut a few months before the soundtrack hit, and it features a wide and impressive range of current and former bandmates (including Krauss on a pair of tracks) plus several other A-list instrumentalists. The result is a deftly executed survey of the bluegrass table circa 2000, a menu that includes melodic pop, rousing gospel, hard-driving instrumentals, new compositions in a traditional style, and revived old favorites. --Marc Greilsamer

5.0 out of 5 stars Bluegrass Superstar Steps Out On His Own, June 28, 2004
Dan Tyminski is in an enviable position, and has been for a number of years. He is a very talented guitarist and mandolinist, and he came up through the Bluegrass ranks honestly, grabbing attention with his voice as much as his instrumental work. That has led him to his current "gig": the right-hand man for Bluegrass MegaStar Alison Krauss. Could Dan Tyminski step out on his own? Absolutely - but even Bluegrass Superstars play grueling schedules in front of crowds that are often meager. In Union Station Dan plays with Alison and Jerry Douglas and Ron Block and Barry Bales, and they play packed arenas as often as they like. What's more, the success of the "O Brother" soundtrack (Dan performed the singing voice for George Clooney in the film) has brought wealth and fame that are head-turning for someone who has labored for two decades in the relative obscurity of Bluegrass.

All that being said: Carry Me Across the Mountain was recorded right before "O Brother", and it is a fine Bluegrass record. The title track opens the album with a ballad by Hazel Dickens (autobiographical, we are told) about being a deathly sick child who was carried across the mountains to the nearest doctor to be saved. Almost every track that follows is a treasure. "Tiny Broken Heart" is a gem and a half (and is performed live on the Alison Krauss and Union Station Live CD/DVD). The final track is a driving rework of Jimmy Martin's "Sunny Side of the Mountain". I personally didn't care much for "Please Dear Mommy", which seemed kind of maudlin even for a country-genre song, but overall I couldn't take away from my 5 star rating because the remainder of the CD is as good as Bluegrass gets.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!!, January 17, 2005
By Banjopicker (Memphis, TN) - See all my reviews
If there were 10 stars, this CD would receive them all. An absolutely amazing compilation of bluegrass. This is true bluegrass, unlike the more "pop" sound of most of AKUS' pieces now. If you love bluegrass, this is a must own!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical journey, December 5, 2004
By it's all about the barbecue "cjblitz" (Lafayette, LA United States) - See all my reviews
Dan proves that he belongs right up there next to Alison Krauss with this CD. A pure magical journey only to be experienced over and over again. I haven't taken this CD out of my player except to play Alisons newest release, and then Dan goes back in. Buy this Cd now!

This is a GREAT cd as far as the music is concerned. Why isn't there more to it? With cds being able to hold up to 80 minutes of music, it should be criminal for the record labels... Read more

Simply the best picker I've ever heard. Tyminski not have the diversity of Ry Cooder or Eric Clapton, but he's in the same league --- to say the least
