Product Description

Product Description

This extra special delicacy from the Gruyere district of Switzerland is well known as the basic ingredient in fondue. But with its delightfully nutty, spicy, full flavor, it is delicious as a table cheese as well. Upon eating Gruyere, one immediately recognizes the taste of whole milk that is used exclusively in making this grand cheese. We say it is grand because a whole wheel of Gruyere weighs about 80 pounds. In fact, it takes over 100 gallons of milk to make a single wheel of Gruyere! Enjoy this traditional favorite julienned into a chef's salad, melted on a hot open-faced sandwich, or, of course, in a classic cheese fondue. Won the Silver Medal in the World Cheese Awards.
  • Made from unpasteurized cow's milk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the usual kind of Swiss cheese, November 27, 2003
By "usaswiss" (US Army in Iraq) - See all my reviews
If you like cheese - and I'm not talking about the kind you mindlessly slap on a hamburger or sprinkle over a side dish at the salad bar - you'll love Gruyere.

My wife, who is Swiss, introduced me to Gruyere cheese via fondue (where it's traditionally encountered) when we were living in Europe. But when we had some left over one weekend, I tried a slice of it with a green apple ... and the rest is history. I simply fell in love with it.

Gruyere is a gourmet cheese and it's price reflects that fact. So be careful, it's expensive ... and not for the obsessive calorie counter. But if your pallet is discriminating and you enjoy fine, quality foods, then indulge yourself. You won't regret anything except the fact that you didn't buy more!

PS: Have a good white wine ready if you plan to make fondue, or a good red wine ready if you have a slice with some fruit! Bon Apetite!
