Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Paul Merkelo has been the solo trumpet player for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra since 1995. He also has held the same position with the Rochester Philharmonic and New Orleans Symphony and worked with Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood music center. He has appeared as soloist numerous times with the American Chamber Orchestra in France. One of this discs highlights, the aria Bist du bei mir (Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach) was written by Stölzel on an anonymous text that evokes a serene contemplation of death: "Be thou with me and I'll gladly go to death and to my repose." This piece is a great contrast to Handel’s Sonata, which end with a lively gigue. All movements of the sonata are played on piccolo trumpet, whose brilliant timbre lends the music a certain sparkle and cheerfulness.

5.0 out of 5 stars We could all learn from musicians like this!, May 5, 2004
By A Customer
This is an excellent recording. In terms of quality and engineering, the recording is flawless (and in a great location as well). At the same time, what makes the CD good is the flawless playing and excellent transcription work of various baroque pieces from Purcell to the Adagio (little of which is correctly pointed out to have been actually written by Albinoni). The highlight of the CD is Mr. Merkelo's beautiful tone colours and playing as well as the skilled work done on the mechanical Wilhelm Organ. A CD not to miss, we could all learn a little from their vigorous support for transcriptive music.
