5.0 out of 5 stars Oh my goodness., August 7, 2004
As a candy afficianado; the taste, texture, and "features" are what interest me in a candy. Since texture and "features" are virtually identical from Hi-Chew flavor to Hi-Chew flavor, I must say that in taste grape is superior to strawberry which is superior to apple (I haven't tried yogurt yet).

The grape flavor is quite unique when you taste across the set of grape candies in existence. You might say it's a light version of the grape Now-and-Later (and to a lesser extent grape Bonkers). Grape is generally my favorite flavor and this is one of the supreme grapes I have had. The strawberry is reminiscent of strawberry Mambas but could also be said to evoke a starburst tropical flavor. Apple I don't like at all. They should replace it with cherry or orange.

The texture is similar to other so-called "fruit chew" candies (Starburst, Mambas, Bonkers, Now-and-Laters, etc.) with one major difference. Hi-Chew is more rubbery than any of the aforementioned brands. It doesn't dissolve immediately in your mouth and can be chewed (without losing flavor) for quite a bit longer. The flavor and texture alone make it more savory and delicious than other similar brands. An additional bonus is that it doesn't stick in my teeth and aggravate my cavities (it isn't sickening sweet).

What do I mean by "features?" In the case of Hi-Chew, this involves indecipherable writing (Japanese, I believe, as my college friend would get shipments of the stuff from his family in Tokyo). The look of the candy is unique as well. The outside of the candy is white. The inner portion is colored to represent the flavor. Overall, it evokes some type of futuristic engineered lychee. This is technology put to good use. Caution: these are heavily addictive (even without msg). Too bad the shipping and handling costs more than the product itself. And too bad you have to wait a few tense days before a Hi-Chew craving is satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonkers!, May 28, 2004
By A Customer
I found this candy in a tiny grocery store, while in Manhattan for the weekend. I always buy strange candy whenever I find it. When I finally tried a piece, I was suddenly obsessed with finding the store again and buying more. They reminded me of Bonkers! candy from the 80's. I think they were discontinued and then reintroduced, but they aren't as good now. This candy has the bouncy, almost rubbery texture of the original Bonkers. My boyfriend found the store for me and I bought more grape and all the other flavors they had. The grape is the best, though.
