Biography

England's the Darkness centered around irrepressible frontman Justin Hawkins (vocals/guitars/keyboards), who, along with his guitar-playing baby brother Dan, bassist Frankie Poullain, and drummer Ed Graham, single-handedly resurrected the rather unfashionable sounds and attitudes of late-'70s hard rock for an unsuspecting generation. Following the demise of an earlier, conspicuously synth… Read more in Amazon's The Darkness Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Avoids the mistakes of most edited versions..., January 12, 2004
By Gabriel Saraco (Wantagh, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is refers specifically to the EDITED VERSION of this album.

***

Here's what you get when you purchase the clean version of "Permission to Land." First of all, the packaging is a bit altered. The naked lady is pixellated out. In the lower left corner of the cover, there's a clearly visible "Edited Version" label - always a good thing, so people who wanted the explicit version don't get any unpleasant surprises.

Now for the actual album content. I'm happy to say they went the extra mile here. They actually re-sung the dirty parts and used alternate lyrics, instead of simply scrambling or muting out the expletives. So, for example, in the song "Givin' Up," the phrase "givin' a f***" has been changed to "givin' it up." It's nice to hear actual singing, instead of just long silences. Some of the edits end up being quite amusing. Also in the song "Givin' Up," the line "stick that ****ing s***" has been changed to "Stick that shucking fit." On the album's opening track, the line "that dog dont give a ****... Woof!" becomes "that dog don't give a duck... Quack!" Instead of getting all whiny and political when the label requested a clean version, they just had some fun with it.

So in this case, you get exactly what you pay for when you buy the clean version. There are still a few drug references, so just be aware of that if that bothers you. But if you just want this album without the bad words, the clean version fits the bill very nicely - and does a far better job than most edited albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best CD. Ever, May 10, 2004
By HeadbangerDuh (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
All hail the saviors of rock and roll! At metal's worst point in history, The Darkness save the world with pure arena rock. No, it's not fused with nu metal like Motley Crue does now. It's just pure arena rock in the form of AC/DC, Queen, and Def Leppard. I just can't believe the power of these songs. I will show you my opinion on them here.

Black Shuck: A catchy, evil-sounding number with pure rock power.

Get Your Hands Off My Woman: An unbelievably rock song.

Growing On Me: Quite possibly the best song on the album.

I Believe In A Thing Called Love: The big hit off the album, with AC/DC-esque guitars.

Love Is Only A Feeling: One of the best power ballads ever. I love it.

Givin' Up: A great catchy, arena rock song.

Stuck In A Rut: A churning metal song.

Friday Night: A Thin Lizzy-sounding semi-ballad.

Love On The Rocks With No Ice: The heaviest song on the album, with roaring guitars and vocals.

Holding My Own: Another ballad, with great lyrics and great power.

This is overall the best album ever released. I think it can single handedly reverse the course of 2000's metal. If you are a metalhead, you must own this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need Money to finish Rocket Ship., April 1, 2004
By qwerty (evergreen Colorado) - See all my reviews
Well, i bought this albulm off a whim.Stop One night while watching MTV i saw a "Buzzworthy" dealio on the darkness. Stop I first blew it off, as a "well, that was stupid." stop. I then saw the full version, and after listing to the guitar riff close to the end, i fell in love with them. Stop being, thirteen, my dad freaks out when all they can say is "Well ____ That." Stop so, i bought the edited version. Stop They are one of those bands that you need to "get". Stop They are supposed to be stupid blatent ripoffs, so get over it and stop whining. Stop The guitar is awsome. stop The only song i skip is "Love on the rocks with no ice. Stop Buy it. stop That is all.
