I picked this up in the local movie store for $9.99. Being a fan of Bing Rhames and remembering Jim Brown's part in Mars Attacks way back when I thought I would give it a try. Ving Rhames wrote the story keep this in mind. The Story is literally about James (Ving Rhames) and his mistakes which lead him to prison leaving behind his son 12 years old and his wife. Inside James is shown off as an animal to local inmates. He and chosen inmates have brauls for money. And they end with James killing them with sick smiles of delight.. Any way James meets another local inamte after a recent scuffle, Jim Brown.... Jim plays a Revolutionist who believes in this speech which a slave holder Lynch gave to other slave holders in order of keeping their slaves orginazed and in order. Turn the black against the black. Light skin , against dark skin, old vs young, women vs men. etc. So he trys to explain to James that this is because of this slaveholder that they (the black people) have been trapped in fighting amongst themselves for all of these generations. Jim Brown is in hopes of rehibilitating James for a new cleaner life on the outside..

James makes it on the outside and soon sees that he and his son are not connecting. His son is the same person he used to be, but he does not want to be that same person, nor does he want his son following in his footsteps. From then on it is a battle of who will convince the other to change their style of living..

I will not spoil anything in fact have left out a lot of stuff because it is that good that you have to watch..

Critics have pretty much universally trashed all movies written by/starring SNL alumni from the early '90s, but 'The Animal' sits up there with 'Billy Madison' and 'Happy Gilmore' as a solidly absurdist comedy. While not a classic, there's enough sustained "smart" dumb humor to make it definitely worthwhile. I've seen too many movies that catered towards the Lowest Common Denominator at every turn. While this one was definitely sold as such, it's much more a case of dumb humor for smart people.
And that Colleen is too darn cute. Her awkward performance was saved in the editing (watch as no dialogue shots stay on her for too long... if at all), but the camera definitely loves her.

The Animal gets 4 stars from me just for making me laugh, out loud, with all the rest of the audience in the theater. And besides, who doesn't think Colleen Haskell is just too cute not to be on the big screen? I'm not someone who typically goes in for Jim Carey or Adam Sandler slapstick, Animal House fart-joke humor, but this one got to me. Its funny. Check it out. Rob's dolpin act and goat seducing scenes are utterly hilarious. I'm sure I'll buy this one on DVD when it comes out.

Rob Schneider is the star and much of it is silliness, but, silliness in fun. When a loser who works for the police department, because he always wanted to be a cop, learns his favorite Chinese place is being robbed he takes it upon himself to respond to the call. No one else was around so why not? But this leads to one of the most comical car accidents ever which leaves him in need of medical attention. Fortunately he is found, his life save by the experimental, radical techniques of the man who found him... A veterinarian using animal bits to make him well. From there you're on your own! It has numerous special features and it is subtitled in English for the deaf. But not all special features are subtitled.

The Animal had a really stupid plot, but I thought I would go and rent it anyway. I found that the movie had the humor, but was lacking a storyline, that seemed reasonable.
The Animal is about a looser, who wants to be a cop. But every time he takes the final exam (the physical part), he always fails. He cant seem to get a date, or get any respect from anyone. (Including a group of kids at the police station, which is hilarious). Then some man finds him after a horrific accident. And replaces most of his bodies parts with animal parts. Thus making him able to run, jump, swim, hear, and smell like an animal.
This film isnt too bad, but its not worth buy. One viewing is enough. If you want to see a good Rob Schneider film, go and rent "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalow". Most of The Animal is predictable.

Looks like AMMY's done it again. They've linked ANIMAL, an urban drama with an all African-American and Hispanic cast, to THE ANIMAL, a silly farce with Rob Schneider. My review is on the latter.

.
THE ANIMAL (2001) is a minor comedy (rated 4.6 at IMDb) that stars Rob Schneider, plus the lovely Colleen Haskell, John C. McGinley (as a jealously villainous top cop), Ed Asner (as chief of police), also demented cameos from Adam Sandler and Norm McDonald.

Here, Rob is Marvin Mange, a police department property room attendant who wants to be a real cop, but he's too feeble to pass the rigorous field test. After his car rolls off a cliff and tumbles down a hill it's left crushed. Marvin barely survives the accident. Rendered unconscious and bodily broken, he's rescued by a scientist who operates and saves Marvin's life with organ transplants from various animals.

Now this new police proby is able to sniff out drugs hidden in smugglers' butts, outrun a horse and swim like a dolphin, plus he has superhuman jumping and hearing abilities. Marvin's also having problems remembering he's still mostly human (wants to mate with a goat, eat hands-free like a ravenous dog, etc.).

It's cute, occasionally amusing but forgettable.
