5.0 out of 5 stars Get a dust cover for your desktop, you're going to use this., November 26, 2003
By "kingu2" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
We have two laptops in the house, a Compaq Presario and the Averatec Notebook, as well as four desktop computers. The hands down favorite has become the Averatec notebook.

Paired with a wireless card and router, it is handy to use anywhere around the home, and the most transportable computer when it comes to going on the road.

The case seems to be standing up well to diverse elements - It has seen everything from 100 degree days to 20 degree nights and come through like a trooper. The XP 1600+ processor is peppy enough to handle any application I've thrown at it, and the LCD display is bright and easy to read.

The Good: At under a thousand dollars, there isn't a better buy in the laptop/notebook market. Three 2.0 usb ports are easily accessable on the side of the case (rather than hiding in the back.) Below the touch pad are the standard two mouse buttons, with the addition of two buttons to scroll up and down in the document. The center touchpad size and positioning prevents accidental cursor movement, something that annoyed me on the Presario to no end.

The Ok: The DVD/CD-RW combo drive isn't the fastest in the world, but it does the job, which is more than I can say for the Presario which has yet to actually play a DVD. Battery life is about two hours with heavy use. The audio ports are at the front of the case which can be a little awkward with headphones and sometimes the volume wheel is bumped by pants.

The Not So Good: The speakers are where the palms would rest, so when your hands are on the keyboard, they are covering the speakers. A bit annoying when listening to audio music. The only outputs are the three 2.0 USB ports, a modem jack, a 10/100 network jack and VGA output - serial port and paralell ports are absent.

Overall, this would make a fine first PC for anyone.
